I have a 2000 Kawi ZX12r 100% street bike with standard fairing and wheels. We have a 1198cc stock engine, clutch and tran with CP high compression pistons, valves, rings and springs and a power commander 3 fuel management system. I don't yet have a rules book but I am wondering if anyone can suggest what class I might be looking at. I am also 100 new to this if you cant tell. Not new to going fast (197 before the mods) but new to actual timed off street racing. Thanks in advance for any info you may have. :?
Chill, get a rulebook, now that that is out of the way, the LTA uses the same rules and they are on line. To help classify your scooter more data is required. Production means looks like stock, all mods out of view. If you have a pipe or any non stock looking parts, then modified. Speed is addictive :-D
Displacement puts you in 1350cc engine class. Assumping you run an after market pipe, you would be in MPS/G 1350 ... As all Ohio records are open records, I would expect this one to be north of 210 after the April meet.
Looks like 220.553, I'm going to have to get a book. I've been 197 bone stock on a country road and after the mods I think 210 is doable but 220+ I think a bore job might be in order next year. We'll see. Maybe it will be something a little south of 220. At least that would give me a fighting chance.
All Ohio records are open as no one has made a run there yet. That said, I wouldn't count on accuracy of factory speedo. GPS might be a more accurate measurement.
Chillin, with all due respect -- I think Joe's right -- that you are looking at a readout from the factory speedometer. Having raced a 2000 ZX12R -- and having invested in some engine work () I will confidently guarantee that you aren't seeing 197 honest-to-goodness miles per hour with a "bone stock" Zx12R. I don't mean to sound rude -- but rather realistic. Don't let us keep you from having fun, though. . .
Though the bikes may behave differently ( and I have absolutely zero experience there) the miles that sort of fly by on a "country road" getting up to speed may give a false impression of what you can do in the Maxton/Wilmington etc 1 mile drag race. I distinctly remember a meet with someone saying "man, been 130 in my ride on the street. Records here I come," and barely get to 115 at the mile. He might have spent a couple of miles ooching up to the 115-120 range and then topped out at the 130 (factory speedo as SSS points out) number down the road. More like Bonneville runs. That said, bring it on! Have fun, be safe.
You're probably right and I have had this discussion before (factory indicated speed vs. real). I know we had her to 192 in fifth on the dyno and the speedo was only off by 5ish. The nice thing is I will have a real indication of what she can do this spring, we have a little track here in MN (BIR) with a real nice 1 mile straight away on a 3.1 mile course.
Most bike speedometers are 10-15% off on the far side of 100mph. A GPS device is pretty close (even a hand held model like the E-Trek). Given that bike speedos are based on engine monitors and gear ratios, they aren't based on actual movement of the bike itself. Even GPS data can be misleading. The speed through the timing traps may not be the top speed reached while getting there. I've also wondered if there might be a bit of wheel spin with such a small contact patch.
OK guys, I have been reading the 2012 rule book and first I would like to settle on what class my bike actually fits in. It is 2300cc all OEM except for the supercharger kit and the 3-1 after market exhaust. I will be running her naked no streamlining (Not even the sports/flyscreen shown on her). (Will need to know whether the hump in the leather suit is counted as stream lining or not. If so, I will be getting a suit with either removable hump or no hump at all.) Only other change is I had a rear rim enlarged to 18-inch diameter so I could get higher speed rated tires and a larger variety. I do have combination radiator intercooler but it is not on the bike at this time because I lowered the boost so the compressed air is not heated as much. Not sure if that matters anyway.
I run premium pump gas and sometimes if I am worried about the quality of the gas I add a little octane booster. If the gas sold at the track is good I will not need and octane booster. I want to run in the gas division. Not sure what type of gas they sell there or the octane and quality?
Here is a picture of the beast I will be taking the removable hard bags off. frame mounts to if needed. Also I will remove the passenger floor boards. But could not figure out from the rule book if I can leave the OEM driver floor boards on or not (I want to leave them)

My objective when I built the bike was to keep it as a street bike and now have over 60,000 miles on her. she is a good cruiser 8-)
A fast powerfull cruiser but still a cruiser :-D
Thanks for your help and suggestions
the exhaust and rim will put you in modified.
there is good event gas and running that will keep you in the gas class
you want to run it ECTA.
frame class- m/bg . octane booster would put you in the fuel class. (m/bf)
engine class-3000/4 . 3000 cc, 4 cycle .
you should be able to keep the driver floorboards.
the blower would also get you out of production class.
I should write the answers down on paper with these multiple question deals. if I leave the reply screen and then go back to it, a lot of times it's blank.
I believe I read somewhere they have 100-octane unleaded at the track along with leaded gas of higher octanes and Rocket is the brand. If I'm wrong on this, someone please correct me, but the aero hump on the back of the suit is not considered streamlining. Streamlining is anything FORWARD of the rider that has the "apparent effect of directing, limiting, or controlling airflow around the motorcycle or rider." In Modified we are allowed to run a streamlined tail section as described at the bottom of page 85 as it is BEHIND the rider. Again, if I'm wrong on any of these points, someone please correct me.
Aero hump on the jacket of the leather suit IS repeat IS streamlining at SCTA events. I don't know if the ECTA rules include that interpretation, but I've had the discussion with the tech guys and interpreters enough to know - no aero hump is allowed in naked bike classes at Bville. I'll take a look through the rulebook and see if I can find it on paper.
Of course -- maybe the rules are different now - I had the issue about 5 or 7 years ago.
Great information guys I must plead stupid as when I first seen the hump on a race suit I thought it was a safety device so your head would not pop backwards :) As for the rim I only modified the OEM one because there are so few tires to fit the 16 inch rim and most were V rated. I know you can get tires shaved and then run up to 200 mph but my goal was 200 mph class so I figured if I had soem V rated tires shaved and accidently went 201 I would get the boot and be disqualified. I think my chances are better finding Z and ZR rated tires for 18 inch rims anyway. As for the front I can drop down to a 120mm width or get a rear 150mm and run her backwards on the rim. Not sure if they would consider it unsafe I seen they let one Rocket do it at maxton and he almost hit 175 mph. I think I might have a chance here as I can pull 180 in fourth gear so 200 in fifth should be doable. I also figure the bike will never hold a speed record set up for street as its theoretical top speed will be 239.4 at 9000 rpm pegged. Not sure if I can hold her steady up there but I have had it a little past 200 on the county roads around here. I am sure she will be different once I add a damper or two that Bill is sending me. Thank God Illinois has a bunch of flat straight roads. and corn/soybean fields :)
Anyway I do plan on stying gas and if the 100 octane unleaded rumor is right it will be just fine. heck I run 93 pump normally. The only reason I add a little octane boost is incase the gas station is ripping people off selling 89 as 93. Not every station around here is above reproach if you know what I mean!!!
Thanks for your input and help. I am looking forward to April. I will be there whether I race or not. If everything goes right with my fourth shoulder surgery and I recover and rehab fast enough I will be racing for sure.
I bought my leathers a couple weeks ago. It's a two-piece Alpinestars Carver suit that has a hump, so I hope it wouldn't be illegal if I pull the front fairings off the Ninja to run Modified. On page 74 it states "Forward of the rider is defined as any area from the most forward edge of the motorcycle to the silhouette of the rider as viewed from the side, excluding the hands and arms." With the hump being on the back of the silhouette, I interpreted it to be ok for the Modified and Altered classes. I could be wrong though, it wouldn't the first time and certainly not the last!
Haven't seen the 2013 rules, but a lot of road racing leathers with a "hump" have been used at ECTA meets. Thanks for the SCTA ruling Jon - I knew I saw them not allowed somewhere. Maybe a new thread about safety wear and machine prep for SCTA (I know folks want to go to Bonneville - even if they don't know it yet) would be helpful in making purchasing decisions.
Section 7-c-2, fairing(leather or cloth)on the back of leathers is allowed only in partial streamlined classes only. oops just noticed this is ECTA thread. the rule is SCTA. :-D
the ecta '13 rule changes can be found on their website.
there's a lot of changes for cars.
