Title: Question on tubing for Roll Cage
Post by: Clay Pitkin on March 29, 2012, 08:03:05 AM
Ok I just spoke with a metal supplier and he told me that the metal size listed in the SCTA rule book NON Chrome molly is DOM material and not just normal pipe.

I looked and all that it says is 1 5/8 OD, and .120 Nominal thickness.

He also said that DOM is for santioned events.

What is the difference between normal and DOM?

Do we have to have DOM material for roll cage?

TIA
Clay

DOM is mild steel that has been Drawn Over Mandrel. You can get 1 5/8 DOM AND 1 5/8 Mild steel which is a "pipe" size in name only

Here is a good thread discussing this.

"He also said that DOM is for santioned events."

All salt events are santioned.

Seamless, DOM and ERW refer to tubing sizes and are measured by outside diameter and wall thickness. Pipe is a whole different ball game. It's sized by a system called nominal sizing and the wall thicknesses are designated by the term schedule. There are a couple of sizes of ERW tubing that correspond to pipe sizing. They are generally used for handrail. The advantage to using those sizes would be that they could be bent using a pipe bender instead of a tubing bender. The disadvantage is that the quality control on the tubing is probably below that of normal tubing.

As I understand it DOM tubing was ERW before it went through the drawing process . After drawing the welded seam is no longer visible . The drawing greatly improves the yield and ultimate strength .

You are correct, I left that out of my post but it is mentioned in that link.
