And...it's Arley Langlo :-D
Don't think Arley will make it this year, but will be at J@S East Valley Garage Wednesday to find out more about Freddy and Arley.
I know as of New Years Eve, that Freddys body was mounted and Arleys was being worked on and Arley didn't think he would make it this year. But things could go better than expected.

I know it's early but Im looking for a room with 2 beds starting on Sunday Night or earlier...I'm be checking back near August 1st....JD
No I'm not running. I will be helping Jim Loving with his C/Gas Coupe 96 Firebird.....................
I'll be there at my usual station in Impound. Bet Dan is sorry he opened THAT door! I'm the shorter, more handsome (and more modest!) Dan. Truth be told, we're both a couple of Old Farts.

Wanna give us your opinion of the possible 500 mph teams? I can think of a few, but I'm curious what others think.
I'll have a go, but bear in mind this is the view of an outsider looking in. Treat me gently if I've missed something obvious!
First a couple of observations.
- 400mph is tough - 500mph is a lot tougher. Only one car has run at 400+mph in 2011/2012. Speed Demon has (almost) made it look easy, but we all know it ain't.
- As far as I can tell, no car has ever run above 400mph in its first year on the salt.
So, my first prediction is that
nobody will run at 500mph in 2013. But I'd love to be wrong.
As to who is capable of 500mph, I only see three genuine contenders.
- Speed Demon have the know-how, recent experience and funding to keep pushing. They have achieved some amazing speeds with the smaller motors, and will surely either go faster this year or break a lot of parts (or both).
- Turbinator II is an evolution of an existing car, run by an experienced team, so may avoid most of the niggly new car problems. The turbine engine means no shortage of power, but I expect they will want to work their way slowly up to 400mph and then on to set a record at 460mph or so, before thinking about 500mph.
- Treit and Davenport is hard to call. Target 550 (mph) shows what they are aiming at. The car looks fabulous but it has yet to run. Do they need to find a major sponsor before committing to a serious record attempt? They might take years to work through various problems at 300/350/400mph, or they might run fast almost immediately. Who knows?
So my hunch is that the following will occur (but not saying when!):
- Speed Demon will set a record above 458.444mph to become the fastest wheel-driven car of all time.
- Turbinator II will take their record back (OK, they are in a different class, but I think you know what I mean), but still below 500mph.
- Treit and Davenport will eventually break 500mph - but after one of the others!
Someone else have a go before I stick my neck out and predict who will be first to 500mph.
Dicky, I disagree partially on Target 550. Marlo and Les have a TON of debugging done on the engine program from the years they ran those mills in their lakester. So, for that part of the equation they will hit the ground running.
While I see the potential for some new 400 MPH+ records I doubt we will see 500. There is not enough race course to support the acceleration and shut down miles required to do this sort of speed. I know from personal conversation with Ron Main that their 2013 goal is not 500.
All personal opinon but, I do have 10 400 MPH Chapter hats in inventory.
D
When someone does set a record over 500 what color will the hat be??
Fred, that's too easy... Black...
300 MPH records were red before there were enough 300+ members to form a 300 Chapter, and 400+ were Blue before there were enough members for a 400 Chapter.
I suspect it will take about 10 members over 500 before the club adds another chapter... not too likely but I want to see them all try.
One of the hardest thing for a "layman" to understand about the 200 MPH Club and the earning of a Red Hat (not just going 200 but setting a record over 200) is some Red Hats need to best a record over 450.
The usual answer is, What? Then some explaination of the classes of vehicle and engine staightens them out.
As All who have earned "hats" even the guys from the 50's I know still wear them proudly. The cruise-ins I go too, many have something positive to say about them and always want to know what I did it in. Not to hurt anyones feelings but saying a roadster bring a smile. I'm sure members driving other vehicles get the same reaction.
As said above the 300 and 400 and hopefully the 500 are chapters, as exclusive as they may be.
JD, I also point out that setting a record over 200 means you must go faster than anyone else has with a similar vehicle since 1949 .
I don't know who's going to do what this year. I do know that I will be there with my camera running, and enjoying my butt off.

And sometimes you got the luck to be the first over 200 mph in the class you are running.... :-D :-D :-D
I'll go with that, Pork Pie....Being the first over 200 with a GMC powered highboy styled roadster will always be the pinicle of the Tone Family drivers racing careers. I was glad that Patrick did that for both Joe Fontana and of course me. It was well deserved for a kid who started working with me in the when he was 5 or 6 in 1975. 27 years later I was proud that the 200 MPH Club let me hand him his hat even though I was not a member. Having him give me mine the following year was more than I every dreamed of especially for a backyard very low budget racer.
I was just a happy to hand Bill Goldman his Red Hat when he took the record from me. Like I told him "Just because I hand you this hat doesn't mean I take mine off"......................JD
Hear, hear, JD.

Are all the above streamliners?.
Not all of 'em. Mike Cook is the organiser of the Top Speed Shootout. He races in modified sports (I think) but is in the mid 200s or so. Sam Wheeler is a streamliner motorcycle. Ferguson family is a flathead (right?) and over 300, and Fast Freddie Dannenfelzer's car was a lakester last time it was out there. I hear he's making it into a 'liner -- but I'm open to corrections if someone knows better than me. That is, corrections on any of the stuff I've said.
Thanks, I had Keith Copeland in mind but finding 20 odd MPH might be too much.
Slim, Ferguson most often runs a GMC and Freddy is building a Streamliner. Wayno
Anyone know anything about the Ferguson turbine car?
I sure thought I remembeered seeing the Ferguson car's class markings on the car as something or other starting with an "X". So just now I grabbed the rulebook and took a look, and sure enough, all the classes with the name of Ferguson as the car owner -- all of the classes start with an "X". There are XO and XF and XXF and XXO and maybe more. But that seems to imply they're running flatheads.
Now - to address my motorcycle-tainted ignorance -- the Jimmy isn't a flathead, is it? Or am I getting all farkled up here?
PS How're your eyes?
X = Vintage
Thanks, Stan -- you convinced me to go through the car engine class rules. But - "V" is the specific designator for Vintage, right? Yet -- while "X" in general says it's a flathead, I see that XO is either a flathead or an inline OHV engine (other specifics, too).
So - I think we're both either cornfused or suffering from drought. Nancy and I just got out of the hot tub - what's your excuse?
V and X are both Vintage engine classes. They can run in non-vintage body classes. Really -- it's easier than the MC classes -- and less, too.
(No silly overbores allowed here.)
Toclub is asking about the ex Ermie Immerso streamliner that the Ferguson's put the turbines into. When it runs it should be fun to watch. Tony
Slim,
You are farkled with the car classes., I would try to explain but, you have to old(like me, 70+) to know what came before.
We will be at the Ferguson race shop on Staurday and more than likely eating lunch off the top of the turbine streamliner.

Mike,
I know Ferguson purchased the old AA500 Patterns (Austin-Aries 426 Chrysler) is this the block they will be using in the car? or are they using a version of the ardun block they make, and if so how are they making the chrysler heads work on the ardun block with the spacing on the center cylinders? I am confused, and need some clarification. :? :? :?
Thanks for any help,
Tom G.
yes don purchased patterns from arias had them re done using billet 426 type Chrysler heads unblown on nitro

I was hoping to be ready this year but I had an eleven month delay on the pinion overdrive units & then they ended up being longer than the dummy units I had built around. I've managed to modify the chassis in the front to make it work there but it's just too long to fit in the rear. I have a 43ft liner thats 2" too short so it's next year for me now.
Sid.
All those delays seem to be aging you. You're up to 161 years old according to your profile. Better hurry up!

Right now its marginal. The new sidecar has turned from simple into a marathon. I'm hoping to have it ready for May. Then try and get the Norton built.
This in response to Tricky Dickys comment about no car going over 400 the first year out. The Summers Brothers car made only eleven runs and did 425 mph on the last run...all in one month, November 1965!
I enjoyed being on the salt then, along with Terry Nish.
On vacation today on west I-80. Lands end was dry, white and flat. It really looked good. No ridges and just a couple of puddles at the bottom of the boat ramp. Looks like there was more salt between bend in the road and lands end. No water could be seen but that doesn't mean there wasn't any water 3 or 4 miles out. Lets race. August to to far out. Let's have have a pre meet in june or july. Does anyone remember those?

That is a very good point. I have tried to track down more information about Goldenrod's time on the salt - found lots about the design and build of the car, the record itself, the recent restoration for museum display, and even the visit to Goodwood in England, but very little about the runs. Is there a comprehensive and accurate account published somewhere (book, magazine, internet ...)?
October/November 1965 must have been a very exciting time, with Bob Herda and the Summers brothers setting wheel-driven records and Bobby Tatroe, Art Arfons and Craig Breedlove doing amazing things with jets. 409.277 and 600.601 are two numbers that say such a lot.

Some of the best Bonneville coverage in this time frame was Hot Rod Magazine. I don't have the issues in front of me (they are at home) but I am sure you can find some to buy on Ebay and such. I wish HRM would do as good these days as back then when the coverage was in depth and muliple pages of text and pictures.

Interesting. So, I'm coming to Bonneville for my first Speed Week with wife (excited) and 7 year old (very excited) from the UK just as spectators. We're wanting to get the most out of the trip and intend to spend time in the pits and also out on the salt watching the runs. We're there for 4 days. So, based on this, would it be worth while getting membership? Would the BNI membership card get us anything which we wouldn't be able to access/view compared to just buying daily/weekly spectator tickets? I've not seen much about parking the RV to get access to the pits, would this mean different parking? Would we all need membership including our son?
A lot of questions I know, so sorry. Just want to make sure I know in advance so we have the best time possible.
Thanks for the reminder Stan, got my pre-entry and hotel res. in yesterday. I am a lot poorer today!!
Phil, buy a membership for you... that gets you a rulebook and membership card right now, so you can review the classes and know what you are looking at. You will also get a gate pass, a member sticker or patch and a poster in the mail later. You will pick up your program for free at the races.
Buy week passes for the wife and kid from Linda at the gate.... unless you want everyone to have their own poster, program and rule book...

I've made the mistake of showing the wife these very generous replies and she's getting all giddy herself. We had spoken a few weeks ago of trying to find a few crews to get in touch with so our lad would feel involved in something really special. You can expect to see three very excited (probably a bit red) Brits to be bobbing about from Sunday morning onwards.

Phil: You've shown your family the photos and other stuff here on landracing.com, haven't you? If not -- go ahead. In the photo gallery there are thousands of images to make your son or wife or even you -- want to get out to Bonneville even sooner. Here's a hint, though, for you to pass on to others that aren't as lucky as you and will be staying at home: During SpeedWeek this website offers live streaming audio from the salt. It can be boring, I'll admit, if you aren't familiar with land speed racing -- but for those of us that have spent our years, our time, and our money out there -- it's music, pure and simple. The folks back home can listen - and maybe, just maybe, if you and your flock mosey over to the Seldom Seen Slim pit trailer - - one or two of you will be interviewed as newcomers to the salt flats. Find us early so we can "promo" it and schedule a time for later - and then you can tell the folks at home when to listen to hear you raving on and on.
See you on the salt.

We're going to Bonneville/Speedweek this year for the first time and really looking forward to it...so have a couple of questions. We can only make one of the two weekends for three days, so which is the better one to catch - the first weekend or the second? Is there racing on the second Sunday or is it finished Saturday? What are the entry fees like and are they daily or weekly? Any suggestions for a first-timer?
Sorry for the thread drift, new to the forum and couldn't figure out how to start a new thread. Thanks alot!
Okay, let's make sure our terms are straight.
Speedweek runs August 10-August 16. Usually by the Tuesday or Wednesday of the week, half of the tents are folded, 2/3 of the crowd is gone, and those left behind are the hardcore or those waiting for the next day to do back-up runs.
If you don't already have a hotel room for the 10th, you're likely out of luck.
World of Speed in September, or
World Finals in October, on the other hand, will still have rooms availble, will be a bit slower paced and likely be a better first-time experience in that the weather is cooler, it's not overcrowded, and the rooms will be a lot cheaper.
If you show up on the 16th of August, you'll be waving so-long to the last of the racers.

I'm glad to hear you're there as it's thanks to the BBC documentary that we're going. Leo (wife/gaffer/all round hero) was touched by the story of Team Page and suggested on including Bonneville in a holiday. A suggestion was all I needed to get flights booked. I'd already checked out your website and shown Lennie some of your runs from the programme. The excitement of just being there to view is building in our house already, god knows how you lot involved with crews or actually driving must feel.
To be honest I spend 6 months trying to minimize my anticipation as every year it looks like we won't make it until the last minute!
But NOW I can start to get excited... and it gets to a daft extent in the final month.
Phil please make sure u come and make yourselves at home with us.
And to the other chap asking you need to be there first weekend. But you may need to assume you'll be commuting in from SLC...
98 days.... not counting. .. honest.

We certainly will, thanks so much for the offer. We won't be arriving until about 5/6pm on the Saturday so will there be much activity at this time or should we just get on the salt early for the record runs at dawn. One question I have, is there any sort of run order in advance? By that, I mean lets say we are on the salt at the 4 mile marker, how would I know when you may be making a run? Or do we rely on the radio to pre-warn me to get the camera and video switched on.

Radio. Staging lanes are first come first serve. I would go out a bit that first night. It will at least give you the layout and the Tshirt lines should be shorter by then.
Its run in order people show up at the start so u need to listen to the radio... we can spend 2hrs plus in the line so not like u can guess because u saw us going down to the line. Secret is set up some shade, open the drinks cooler, stick the radio on and chill into the event.
Arrive Sat night 6pm u want to head directly to the casinos for the hotrod show. Then be on the Salt for dawn for the record runs!!!

If you want to video someone in particular, you need to find out -- from them -- which course, of four, they're running on.
Course #1, a long course, is the only one you can photograph from the starting line on past the pits.. There is not access except for the starting line for spectators on the other three.
You'll get a map of the layout when you get on the salt.

That's good to hear. I thought the only viewing would be the pits and the long run nearest the pits. I didn't think that joe public would be able to get near the start line.
Be prepared. There may not be a CB feed this year.

At the 2012 world finals the BNI decided not to announce the times on the CB. They used a FM station you had to listen to and the two guys talked about a lot of non racing crap. This coming year would have been my 30 th year in the timing venue but they decided they didn't need me at the world finals. I still don't understand the reasoning behind the not using the CB so the racers and crews know what is going on. I can only hope they wake up and bring it back.

Yes, it sucks having to have radio AND CB on to try and hear everything when you are in the chase truck. With all the technology we have at our disposal this is like going backwards a few decades?!?! :?
Glen,
Could we racers just pay you a stipend to announce on the CB on say, channel 13 or something? A lot better than what I heard [or didn't hear] last year. 10-4 Good Buddy!
Doug
A drawback to that, Doug, is that the only way to get current information on who's on the course and speeds and all of that -- is from the official computers (well, and some of it is on the official FM radios). Many's the time I wished that there was a better way to tell folks what's going on (than listening only to what the parcel out). Ah, such is life. Has anyone received a good answer as to why the change was initiated? I do remember that last year at WF we were told that the two announcer format was a trial - an experiment, so to speak. Ron Christensen was there to help the new guy figure out what to do -- and the two of them got a tad too "chatty" so we didn't hear what we wanted to hear. Maybe this year. . .
Speaking of nothing -- I've just clicked and sent the SpeedWeek registration form. I've never used the Adobe "EchoSign" thing - never heard of it, for that matter. Did any of you use it? Does it work? I printed a copy of the completed form just in case, and will probably send JoAnn a note asking her to confirm that it got there. I spent about half an hour looking for where to click "done signing", though. Ah, the fun of technology. See you on the salt - in about three months.
QuoteGlen,

The first couple years I was out there, the radio announcer was right at the starting line broadcast booth. They were close enough you could hear the engines fire, and we could hear the cars pushing off even if the announcer was busy with something else.
For the photographers like me, the most important info we need was who is staging to run next, and a brief comment that the course is on hold or they are leaving the line, or the run was aborted with an early turn out.
If I know a car is pushing off, I can predict when they will be to my location to with in just a few seconds. That gives me the time I need to get the camera in position and pick them up as they come over my local horizon in time to start tracking them. I suspect the same info would be very helpful to folks in the pits and crews waiting for the car down course.
With out that info you are forced to watch the horizon like a hawk all day and it is exhausting to try to keep continuously alert when things sometimes shut down for an hour then out of the blue Blowfish screams by with no notice before you even know a car is on the course. If the wind is wrong you may not even hear the car on the course until he is right on top of you.
Someone stationed between the starting line and the 1/4 who could reliably call out cars leaving the line would be very valuable, they could also tell of starting line spins etc. which often leave folks down course hanging for 15+ minutes trying to figure out why no car is on the course.
If they don't choose to have a formal announcer that covers that basic info if we could perhaps get a pool of 6 - 8 people who could rotate shifts doing that on CB, folks would at least know who was on course, if not their exact speeds and times.

The "shows" are just an impromptu gathering of cars. Biggest on the first Friday and Saturday since a lot of the West coast folks drive their hotrods to Wendover. The hotrods start to thin out at the beginning of the week.
There are hot rods and customs parked at the Nugget every night from thursday on, Phil. Also smaller gatherings at other hotels and gas station lots. Regarding your anticipation about going to Bonneville, I'm sure it will be everything you imagined and once you've been there, you'll never get the hook out. Larry:
In years gone past Ron Christensen was stationed in his radio trailer between the long and short course (now called #1 and #2 course(s)). That's why you could hear the engines, etc, at the vehicle left the line. Many's the time that I'd be in the announce booth with Ron and he'd put down the mike and plug his ears with fingers -- that's how loud it can get in that trailer. Especially when a racer running a big load fires up the engine.
As for stationing someone at the line to do some announcing -- that'd be great, and I'm all for it. One issue that'd make it not so good as Ron did is that he got copies of the registration sheets for each and every vehicle (save those that entered late and a few others), and he'd go through them before the event, put them in tabbed numerical order in a big three-ring notebook, and then quickly look up the data on the vehicle that's just been announced as next.
Who's next, and how do you find out? You listen on the official FM radio channel and hear the starter calling in with the vehicle number and name of rider/driver - - so the information can be entered into the timing computer. Short that FM radio -- there's no easy way. More so because as you know, scads of times the vehicle that "should" go next by virtue of its place in line -- chooses to sit idle for a minute or two and let the racer in the other lane go first. Back to needing the FM radio, and I assume (safely, I'm sure) that SCTA doesn't care to lend anyone a radio set.
If you're interested in further discussion -- feel free to contact me by regular ol' email. I'd like to chat with you.

Yes fully aware of all of that. The noise problem is easily solved, (for the long course) place the observer on the mountain side a couple hundred yards from the line. Even with out an "official radio" simple observation and a pair of binoculars would tell you who is likely next up. (at least for the cars and bikes that have large enough readable numbers that contrast with paint color.)
As you say often you have two cars staged side by side and one of the other goes sooner than the other, but to folks down course all they need to know is that car xx and car yyyy are next up, then announce which ever pushes off.
All the observer would need to get other info like course holds is a scanner tuned to the "official" FM freq. no need for SCTA to tie up a transceiver for a one way information path.
The registration sheets would be nice, but the official program would do as a substitute for 85%-90% of the cars on the long course. The complication comes with the recent 4 course structure where the second long/short course could be running "long course cars". A proper observation position a couple hundred yards from the line would make those cars visible by binoculars as they push off, although staging cars might be hidden until the pull out.
I just think that perhaps folks are looking for a high tech solution to a low tech problem. Although the background chatter is/was nice during quiet times it also was very distracting and there is a tendency to tune it out mentally until you realize they are running again as a car whizzes by.
Personally I would like a "data only" channel for the cars staged and cars leaving the line. Leave the color commentary to the low power broadcast AM/FM.
For those who have a primary interest in specific car a terse data only channel to listen too just like in HAM radio emergency nets would be the easiest to monitor mentally. As a fellow ham I know you understand how you can focus your mind to monitor a call frequency if it only has meaningful info on it.
The one problem that would need to be addressed for such an effective staging/car on the course CB data channel would be sufficient signal strength at the 6-7+ mile points on the course to be reliable down there. Best solution to that would be a short mast and a small beam antenna pointed down course. The folks on the line could hear off the back or side of the beam with no problem while still reaching down course well enough to bury any QRM from the highway.
Larry
Some of that might work. But only for one course out of four.
And finding something in the program, where the entries are sorted by category and class and numeric order in the class, is very time-consuming even if you know the order they're presented in.
There's a 3-inch minimum for numbers (often less for class) and some are located on horizontal panels and behind components but are still easily read by the starter -- that's who they're for. And trying to read those numbers, through officials, crew members and spectators, would be difficult.
As to cars running on or about the starting line -- that means nothing. Some warm a vehicle starting two back. Some start when the starter points at them.
Back to time I've spent in the announcing trailer. Ron Christensen uses binoculars to get the vehicle number when he doesn't have it on the radio, and there are many times when the number isn't visible. Sometimes it's hidden by bystanders or crew, and sometimes by another vehicle, and sometimes by sheer bad luck. But it does happen frequently.
The new announcing regime has the trailer at the Impound area, so there's no way for the announcer to see who's on course 'til the vehicle is about (maybe) the 2 1/2 or so. They're at the mercy of the information sent out by the tower. And to make it very muddled -- remember that the tower is working on multiple courses, and therefore it is not unusual at all for some of the information to be dropped or simply not announced.
So the best way would be to listen to the starter's radio channel while stationed at or near the line. But boyoboy don't think of transmitting on that frequency. It's a safety thing first and foremost.
No worries, interfering with someone else's channel is a big no-no, even if you had a type accepted radio, especially for someone who holds an FCC license.
Yes the car numbers are often unreadable even under the best or circumstances, I have pictures or a couple of cars that it took me over a year to figure out what the car number was because I could not even find where the number was on the car body even in full screen blowups of the car.
Larry
As most of you know I announced from the CB radio in the tower and annoucing 4 courses during the whole week, The problem now is they really have no one that can keep up with it. With 4 courses and 4 fm radios passing on the info to the tower and that data entered into the computers its difficult to do the job with current tower operation. The experience isnt there. I worked up each time they added courses and had a Dodge good handle on it plus knowing most of the cars, crews and history. It's a tough job and requires a lot of attention and concentration for hours. I loved doing it and being in the timing venue for 29 1/2 years. I just hope the SCTA/BNI wake up at put the CB back so the racers know what is going on, plus it's a safety factor for all concerned. One other thing is course 1 & 2 should do the annoucing as should 3 & 4 to cut down on the air traffic on a single CB channel. I ask them to do this when the 4th course was added, They said no.
Anyway thanks for all that supported me all these years and felt I was screwed by being not needed anymore by EMAIL.
Glen, Dean, Wes, Ron, etc. - the recent "wave of early retirements" among the timing/starting volunteers is quite alarming. What gives? One day, we will NEED those experienced people to run the show . . .

My dad went out to the salt yesterday to check it out. Drove course 1 and 2, said the salt is dry (even at lands end) and hard hard. I saw his truck and the only way I could tell he was even at the salt was traces of salt on the mud flaps, hardly even dusted the wheel wells. He said the thing he liked the most is ther was no "fluffy stuff" on the top layer of the salt. That is a good thing

Thank you so much for all the pictures you've sent so far, I've also received a bundle from Wally (sidecar) and will be getting a selection printed this weekend. Next Wednesday Lennie will be "sharing" these pictures in class at primary school and I'm going to get questions from the class. I had a look for some Bonneville related books on Amazon but they seem very over priced. Are there some vendors on the salt which have books for sale? I've seen the Save The Salt book on the home page so will try and get a copy of that for sure but I'd also like to have a read of Burt Monroe's book but don't want to pay a fortune.

Don't fret Willie. Every time a starter retires for whatever reason, another one is added to the roster. If you like standing out in the hot sun all day long (and getting filthy if you're at El Mirage), you too could be a starter. I've been doing it for a few years now and I really enjoy it. It can definitely wear you out though. Sometimes people get tired of doing it and sometimes people can't physically do it any more. I'm still fairly young and will stick with it as long as I can. But nonetheless, regardless of who the starter is, there will always be someone there to check your belts and send you on your way.
Nathan. I don't think that was Willie's point...

That is what I was wondering about. Thank for posting it. I guess it is for all the Bonneville area. I hoped it was for the bend and not the salt. Since the bike isn't registered and it doesn't need a title here it might be cheaper to get a Potty from Jon and not bring it along. It would sure be easier to get around in the pits. Walking is good for you anyway.

Which comment reminds - and makes me smile since just yesterday I was thinking that it's about time to start telling all of youse guys how to go about getting a private toilet for SpeedWeek 2013.
I'll post the story later -- gotta go work at the mini storage business right now -- but you'll need to contact Trevor at Honey Buckets to make your arrangements. he delivers the units to our pit and you fetch them from there - as well as a small padlock to keep your unit yours, not open to the public. You pay a flat fee for the event plus a service fee for each time you want the unit pumped and cleaned. More later. . .
Keep this quite but most race cars/ bikes aren't registered. What will we do, what will we do???
We don't want to open up a new can of worms.
I put the bike up for sale and will use that money to rent a potty or I can charge the pit crew to use it. hehehe My poor pit crew, what they must think of me.

Hooley, I hope to get a speeding ticket... record is way above 45... there are several bikes that might not have their OHV permit but they won't get a speeding ticket

Two ideas for you..
1. CA and many states have reciprocal licensing agreements with UT, so if it is licensed here, it is good there.
2. Failing that, make sure who ever is riding the bike has a helmet and looks/acts responsible. You will attract less attention and hopefully avoid detection. FYI - Golf carts are also exempt. I checked with UT DMV.
3. Happy news - race bikes and cars enrolled in the event are exempted from the licensing rules. I asked that one too!
Feel free to email me if you have any concerns. miriammacmillan@me.com
Miriam
Thanks Mac for checking on that.
A lot of racers at the drags have little mini bikes to get around in the pits. They are not able to be registered with state [Okla] so there isn't title or tag for them. There isn't anyone that bothers you unless you are doing something bad wrong. Then they just ask you to stop of leave. We don't have to register them, hell we don't even have to register trailers unless they are commercial or big. Car/ other small trailers are if you possesses it, it is yours. No tags ,no taxes every year. Yeap, they are targets for thieves.
Thanks again,
Hooley
We travel with two golf carts and an ATV.
In 2011 I bought a UT registration for the ATV since I was using it to commute to the Bend and that route takes one onto State of UT property. I did get asked by the pit guard to buy an orange pit vehicle pass for the ATV, and I did. The golf carts did not get passes.
In 2012 I did see two cases of the BLM stopping an ATV and an "off-road golf cart".
They told the golf cart guys to remove it from the area (start line, long course), and they loaded up onto a truck and took it away.
Two kids on an ATV by the dumpsters were surrounded by BLM cops and cars and I don't know the outcome of that. But I would think it was not good.
I had this thought, no really ! For years we have accused the BLM of doing nothing in regards to the flats and surrounding areas,Now I'm wondering if we opened a can of worms.
after watching them comming down on people just kicking back and enjoying a small campfire to the kids putting around on mini bikes at the Bend, now we are seeing hopped up side by sides with cop light racks on them. So is the next thing patroling the pits and return road for unlicenced pit bikes and other non licenced pit vechicles, Or did we bring this on our selves ??

after watching them comming down on people just kicking back and enjoying a small campfire to the kids putting around on mini bikes at the Bend, now we are seeing hopped up side by sides with cop light racks on them. So is the next thing patroling the pits and return road for unlicenced pit bikes and other non licenced pit vechicles, Or did we bring this on our selves ??
To bad they couldn't have policed the borders as well, instead of letting in 20,000.000 illegal alians which have devastated the construction jobs for U.S, citizens, wages, Fed and state, and social security taxes not collected.
THINK about 20,000,000 illegals ... thats half the state of Ca. or 40 citys the size of Fresno [500,000 thousand]
and that 20.000,000 million is only what the feds admit to.
Cowards picking on kids and unlicensed ATVS.
Ditch them.. run into the back of the 222 trailer, we'll slam the door shut. :-D Well next year, won't be there this year.

Just checking E mail and Debby Dannefelzer posted that the 1st preliminary trip by SCTA/BNI was canceled as

Two months to go and already 155 posts.
But you know things have REALLY kicked off when Kent makes his first post. Can flames be far behind? :-D
If anybody is curious. This is what the flats looked like yesterday at 41,000 feet :-D Wow it looks small at this angle. Then again what doesn't when you can see from Wells to Salt Lake City....

Trying to make plans for Speed Week. Might have a friend help me tow my car to the Salt, arrive Thursday to set up and go thru Tech. That buddy needs to fly home on Friday when the rest of my crew will be arriving.
Is there a reliable connection to get him from Wendover to the SLC airport for a return flight? I don't think the casino buses will drop someone at the airport, so what else works for this? Besides hanging at the freeway exit with thumb and/or sign....

The bus does drop at the Red Lion Hotel, where most of the pilots and flight attendants stay if they are doing a lay-over in SLC. From there, it's a $15.00 cab ride to the airport.

Been a few years since I was able to go. Making plans to go this year.
I can't picture not having Glen on the radio. What a bummer.
So, it sounds like no CB. Would guess that there will be an AM feed, but that was not really aimed at the hard core observer.
I have a couple of FM frequencies, but not sure they are current. Anyone have current frequencies?
Thanks
Jim
Last year the radio broadcast was on 89.7 FM. If you're asking about VHF or UHF frequencies - those are for the officials, not us in the peanut gallery.

I have a similar picture of Black Rock somewhere, looks crazy small from the air. Hoping the
BLM will allow BOTH the Burning Man festival and great LSR meets in the foreseeable future.
If you have a scanner you can find the VHF or UHF freq that the officals are using and listen to them. Or for those with ham radios you can also use them to pick up the VHF or UHF freq.
Yes, I was referring to the scanner frequencies.
It was suggested earlier in this thread that you listen to the starter(s) to determine who is running next. I did that the last time I went and it was helpful.
A person can always scan some of the logical frequencies and find the official frequencies, but I thought it would be easier if someone knew them.
When I volunteer as a corner worker at our vintage sports car races, they are very public with their frequencies. It really keeps everyone informed.

When should we expect to see the Pre-Entry list for Speed Week? Soon I hope?
I got what I think is the most important entry list the other day. It's my entry packet and inspection sheet. The other stuff will come, eventually, but at least I know that I'm registered. :-D
It'll probably be on the SCTA website by the end of the week.

It is!!!!
Looks like we will have to create a separate record line in the rulebook for TO entries. One or two? One for cars and/or one for bikes.

Well next year there will be more cup cars coming. More participation might get them to give us a class like the east coast does. But its still fun going 200!!

On left side of screen go to Bonneville.
Then Speedweek.
Then 2013 pre entries.
I see Target 550 has a pre-entry.
Heres a link for those on iPad (like me), who cant get the link downs on the SCTA page.

salt27 you are a keen observer.
Marlo decided that time is slipping away and any time there is access to the salt it had better be used.
Watch for the three spired white tent in the SDRC pit area.
Target 550 will be there and running. These will be shake down runs but knowing Les Davenport
as I do you can expect he will stand on it sometime.
FREUD
I know Freud posted this in the build diary thread, but we just got a group of photos (shot by Jason Hosking) on the Target 550 web site:
http://www.target550.com/gallery/215_woodburn_test_01/index.html (http://www.target550.com/gallery/215_woodburn_test_01/index.html)
This is what I posted on other sites:
1. The liner has run twice at Woodburn.
2. According to Marlo, it's at 98 percent completion status.
3. Video will be forthcoming (as soon as I get and edit it.)
4. The proposed trip to Wilmington, OH has been scratched.
5. The liner and team WILL be at Speed Week, (Aug 10-16, 2013) as plans stand now.
I can't wait!
What's this "You can't wait" stuff? You think that we aren't dang near as excited about seeing this car moving on the salt as you? Probably not as excited as Marlo is, but otherwise -- yup - I think we're all looking forward to seeing and hearing and just plain watching this car move under power. Thanks to you and Freud and everyone for the continuing story and photos.
SCTA's getting ready for the huge influx of ex-NASCAR entries. So far they've filled up three trailers with templates for the 1968 thru 1984 models. Later ones to come. They're just trying to make it easy for Dan in Impound.
. . . and as far as AIRs are . . . I talked one guy into it. I'm not sure he knew about it. No minimum at BV, so don't have to even worry about the soft 160 at Elmer.
So far one SBC and a 331 Hemi. No Studebakers, Y-blocks, Oldmobiles, Cadillacs, Packards, AMCs, Pontiacs, 348s, DeSotos, Dodges, Plymouths or stroked Crosleys.

I like Dan, besides he is a nice guy and I wouldn't wish that on him. NASCAR has gone to a grid template to keep the teams honest from cheating. Stan, you will need more than three trailers for all the NASCAR templates.. This grid template is from a team that one of my friends works on.

OK, I have never tried to attach anything on the message board so I hope this works. I created an excel spreadsheet for the pre-entry list. Which by the way took way longer than I expected. 2 tabs at the bottom one for cars and one for bikes. I sorted by body style then engine class but you can sort how you like.

The Nascar guys will have to supply their own templates. What is this TO thing of which you speak? And, most important - why?
DW
They're talking about having a new class -- 'cause the ECTA has one.
As I said - why?
Did anyone notice on Dallas' spreadsheet that there are more single entries in class than there are multiple entries in a single class. Seems like enough classes to me.
DW
Dan you are right on.
There are only 22 bikes running on Open records. Guess they better add some more classes. It's a shocker -- a couple of bikes are in the same class -- let the race begin!
Somebody needs to AGAIN explain why a NASCAR class can't work.
That topic is worth bringing out the DEAD HORSE icon!
The Stan Beck guy has a mathematical calculation about how many BIKE classes are potentially available to compete in - it's somewhere beyond INFINITY, if I recall.

Dallas,
Thanks for converting the PDFs. That was a beating last year. The way that they create the PDFs does not play nice with Excel.
I'm kind of a numbers nerd. Here is something I have been working on for awhile.
I attached the spreadsheet I have been using for the past few years.
347 cars running in 67 classes (344 pre-entry cars running in 67 classes in 2012)
12 open records (7 open records in 2012)
35 streamliners (non 2 wheel) (28 in 2012)
32 lakesters (43 in 2012)
107 roadsters (111 in 2012)
169 bike entries running in 132 classes (169 pre-entry bike running 135 classes in 2012)
18 open records (21 open records in 2012)
I don't understand all of the bike stuff to look at any other stats.
Here is a link to the same spreadsheet from last year:
http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,11449.msg195726.html#msg195726 (http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,11449.msg195726.html#msg195726)
I also have a spreadsheet with pre-entries and run logs from last year. It is too big to attach. Let me know and I can send it to you.
How about figuring how many entries are running single in their class. How many entries are running in a class with multiple entries?
That would tell us if we need to add more classes.

OK here you go Dan. Actually Doug's numbers refer to categories not classes. This is cars only data:
347 Entries
248 Classes within 67 Categories
50 classes have multiple entries (roughly 20%)
198 classes have single entries (roughly 80%)
See the pivot table tab on the excel spreadsheet for details.

Public Service Announcement: The records for excel spreadsheet I posted were entered onto aforementioned spreadsheet at 2:00 in the morning when I couldn't sleep by looking at the records in the record book and manually typing the records into the spreadsheet. My brain also struggles (especially at 2:00 am) with the random alphabet soup of classes for vehicles of the 2 wheeled variety. P, P-P, M-P, MPS-PG, PMS, STD, WTF.....etc. That being said please understand that there could potentially be errors on the record column. The Rulebook and the SCTA site are the only place where you can find the true and accurate record. End of PSA, That is all.
A bike guy responds to Dallas' "...random alphabet soup of classes (for bikes)..." by saying that sure, cars are so much more understandable in class designation.
After all - who could be confused by something running in C/CGALT or XXO/BF or I/VBFPRO?
At least bike classes tell, in plain numbers and not secret code letters, the engine size.

If anyone is interested there is a class for Vintage Oval Track VOT, and Midget Vintage Oval Track MVOT. But they have to be a style used from the 1920's through 1957, and the engines have to be pre 1948 design engine blocks, ie no modern OHV V8's or blowers are allowed.

If you want to run your NASCAR vehicle for a record then just enter it as a streamliner. As long is it has 4 wheels, does not use modified production bodies and at least two of the wheels are covered it's legal.
See, no need for a special NASCAR class, they already have a record class they can run in.

Ok, gotta do this quick while the internet goblins are feasting on someone else's internet service instead of mine!!!
Just a reminder everyone, the lanes will be set up just like they were last year coming into Land's End. Remember there are 4 count 'em 4 lanes but only 3 lead onto the salt!!! The 4th lane (that would be on the driver's side of the vehicle, also known as the North side of the road) is the EXIT/EMERGENCY LANE!!! This is a DO NOT ENTER LANE and will get you an unhappy discussion with me!! It will also delay your advance to the salt!!! The only vehicles that use that particular lane are the officials in the morning and my crew trying to get in place to help you through faster!!!! The lane that is in the middle of the road and straddles the yellow line is the Racer's Thru Lane, if you've got your Pins for everyone in your vehicle, that's your lane for the entire week. If you know you will need more than the 4 pins you get after inspection, you can get them from us anytime.
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY are inspection days and are FREE to the public, but if you are going to Spectate all week, get your passes before Saturday!!!
If you are NOT A VOLUNTEER........NO YOU CANNOT SET UP YOUR PIT ON WEDNESDAY!!!! Let me repeat that...
IF YOU ARE NOT A VOLUNTEER/WORKER......NO YOU CANNOT SET UP YOUR PIT ON WEDNESDAY!!!!!
If you need to leave passes with me for people showing up later, put them in an envelope with your name and entry number, let me know when they are expected and I will make sure they get them at Land's End.
It's going to be an exciting year and I can't wait to see all of you again!! Stay Safe, Safe Journey, and....I'll see you on the salt!!!!!

We are close to ready. Had the bike on the dyno Saturday. Got it tuned and electrical gremlins fixed. Had to put a new wiring harness on it. Five years on the salt finally got it.
Five years? Jeez, Fred -- our brand-new pit bike didn't get past its first winter following a year on the salt. Last October I washed it, lubed it, cleaned it, washed and lubed and cleaned and dried it -- and this year the chain has magically turned from a flexible power transmission device to a bit of solid rust-colored art. As for wiring - HAH! Good thing it doesn't have much.
I guess that'll teach me what to expect when buying a pit bike -- but it's what I expected, what with buying a $300 Chinese Briggs & Stratton knock-off. I thought I'd get more than one year out of it, though. . .
Five years? Not bad. See you on the salt.
I had the same problem with the chain on my peddle power bicycle the first year I went out there with it.
Solved the problem by switching to a nickle plated bicycle chain.
The plain blue steel chains have about as much resistance to salt rusting as I have for eating chocolate cake.
leave the chain soaking in marvil mystery oil between events after the world finals.
Whatever is my last event of the year I throw the chain away after it!! :-D
Best method for keeping your chain from year to year:
1. After the event immediately remove the chain.
2. Put chain in a pot of water, bring to a boil. As soon as the water boils, change the water, do the water change/boil 3 times.
3. Remove chain from the water and cool.
4. With compressed air blow all of the water out of the chain; pay close attention to the rollers
5. Let chain sit in dry area for 2-3 days. This will insure all water has evaporated.
6. Put chain in a coffee can and fill with ATF (new or old).
7. Put a lid on coffee can and store on a shelf.
8. A few weeks before the event, pull the chain out of the oil and wipe clean with towels.
9. After the chain is 100% clean, throw chain in garbage.
10. Install a brand new chain.
This method is fool proof and will guarantee your chain will be ready to go every year!

The motor went on the dyno tonight to get a good warm up. Tomorrow will be power/tune pulls. It runs really smooth for a 250cid Rat motor. E/PP this year. Dan, sharpen your protractor and have Jim Miller calibrate the pump 'cause the rat returns!
Of course, we may be sleeping in the Montego parking lot, but whatever... (anybody got spare rooms?)
I was surprised and sad to here about the Maro Special. The car is such a beautiful and well designed piece, I thought it might all come together this year. I guess we will never know, at least for now. If somebody has the money (probably a lot of money) and a motor it would be a great car. If someone has the money I have a 318 plymouth with about 125 horsepower.
I'll be ready for you Jim. Here's to a red hat this year.

From what I heard last night, that red truck is going to have fun this SW.

Our new D/PP Y Block is going together. Lets hope all the parts get there in time!
" Y Block !!! "

"Y" not.."Y" block
The first name in "Y Blocks" is Karol Miller. So any time I hear "Y" block he's the first one I think of.

Hey Dan,
My custom embroidered red hat can remain safely ensconced in its glass display case for another year. Ain't gonna make it with this equipment! maybe someday...

What is the Museum site? I'm in two minds as to where to park the RV for our 4 nights - the Bend, up in the foothills or at the Nugget. Not heard of the Museum though?
The old "Scorpion Flats"; far eastern edge of town on the north side of Wendover Boulevard.

Ta, is this going to be signposted........or will it be plainly obvious when we drive into town? I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing but I'd like to have a rough idea where I'm heading before the police pull me over for kerb crawling as I make my 15th run up the main road.
You'd have a danged difficult time missing it. CarQuest Auto Parts is the easternmost business in Wendover, Utah -- and the museum's location is directly across from CarQuest. Well -- absolutely directly across is a large rock outcropping, but nestled on the east side of the rock is the museum. There's a paved access street and last year there were a few large signs welcoming Bonneville racers. Don't fear too much -- it really will be difficult to miss it.
Some pictures to help for visual reference.
These were taken just about 24 hours before they opened the camping area last year they were still grading and finishing the site.
Not that we didn't believe you folks that have told us about the Museum site being ready -- but we wanted to have Mike Crawford confirm it to us - that we could hold Salt Talks 2013 there again this year. And he's just done that on Nancy's Facebook page. And sure enough, he says that an additional five acres have been cleared and readied for campers.
Salt Talks is set to happen on Sunday late afternoon -- the 11nd of August 2013. We'll start cooking by 5.30 or so, most likely, and should have enough food and pop for at least a few dozen of you - maybe a few hundred if you don't all eat 25 burgers each. We'll have hamburgers and chicken breasts, chips and pop. We'll be selling Salt Talks 2013 t-shirts - I'll post a photo of the art soon - and we'll raffle off any swag that any of youse guys want to donate. The raffle tickets will be available at the event.
Donations, please: whether you give us a t-shirt from your race team (or a few of 'em) or framed or autographed photos (Pork Pie has been ever so kind and offered his work for a few years! Cherish them!!) If I can figure out how to burn CDroms I'll have some copies of Challenge - a film on the Art Arforns LSR attempts with his jet cars, and those will be available for purchase (or you might win if you buy a ticket or three). Speaking of that film, thank Doug (Buickguy) for pointing me toward that film on eBay over the winter.
I'll end here -- but will make a handful more posts about Salt Talks as the date draws nigh. See you on the salt!!
Many thanks to Slim and Hotrod. Found it now on Google Maps so that gives us another option of somewhere to park the rig. I reckon we'll also pop on down for Salt Talks, we want to experience everything Speed Week has to offer so would be rude not to show our (probably red) faces.
Sure you don't believe me Slim!? :-D My word came from Mike to Tony Huntimer to me since we are also doing our HAMBBQ and raffle there Saturday night and Tony has a deal for all Bonneville photogs Monday night.
You hear that photographers? Get in touch with Tony!
Well, umn, unh, it's not that I don't believe you, yanno. It's sorta like "I'm from the Government and I'm here to help you" - I don't believe you.
Seriously, I took your comments as a good omen, but with the big hassle we go through making Salt Talks happen -- I wanted to contact Mike directly for his first-person report. Next we contact Smith's Grocery store to order the food. And wait 'til you get to Salt Talks this year. We're going to have a race team help out like we've never had help. Nancy and I still want volunteers to sell tickets and flip burgers and so on - but one team has stepped up with some new offerings.
And of course -- donations for the raffle are still welcome.
And final note: we were hoping to have live music with a band touring the States, but that won't happen 'til '14, it looks like. But if you've got a guitar and amp or drums or something and want to jam a bit -- we'd love to have you there.
Slim, maybe you, Tony and I can work to keep a space clear at the site. Tony and I know Saturday will be tight but Sun/Mon should be easier.
I talked directally with Mike earlier this week. We (Tman and I) are cleared for a spot on parking 'lot' area. The HAMB BBQ is Saturday and I have planned my little fest on Monday as to not work against Salt Talk, and I want my get together for the racers who are my greatest supporters and photo subjects. So we will be cooking some sliders on the hot plate, with some water and Costco sodas starting around 3:30, that is around depending on everything.
So back to the spot, I hope to have it 'roped out' on Thursday when I get there, and it will be free on Sunday. So contact me and we can see what we can do,,,909.213.0679
hey Tony, 3:30?? us working dont get off the salt till after 7pm oh man I going to miss your party too
So without going back and reading all 19 prior pages, can we get a recap of those of you who are going? Im trying to get a kitchen pass to go up for Friday thru Monday and it would be great to get to meet some of you if I make it up there.
Come find Nancy and me at the pit. It's a big black trailer liberally decorated with stickers proclaiming "Seldom Seen Slim Land Speed Racing" - as you'd expect. We usually park right by the main pit entrance/impound/registration. Stop by and say howdy, you hear me? :-o
Will do SSS. Glad you got over your bee sting today. Saw Nancy's post on FB about it. Scary stuff. Looking foward to my first taste of the salt.

We should be near the front of the pits close to tech again with the #416 Unibody. Usually pretty close to Slim and the White Goose guys
Sounds good T. Timmys track stands out pretty well in the pics I've seen of it.
Here's a note from Jonathon Boxhold out in Wendover (I think). It's lodging for someone with a family or crew, I think, I betcha. . .

It is in great condition with new furniture.

Studio (unfurnished) for rent in Wendover UT.
Daily rate : $130.00
Weekly rate : $700.00
2 Week rate : $1200.00
Pictures available for those who are interested.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in Impound. Dan W and I continue our unholy alliance and I know I greatly enjoy seeing all you guys half way to your goal. I'll be the shorter old guy in Impound.
Dan
Does anyone know a good place to fill up our trailer with fresh water in Wendover ? I don't want to haul all the water with us. Thanks..............
How much water do you want -- 100 gallons -- or a tanker full? There's a spigot at the Pilot truck stop - west side of the building, near the front corner. Air machine right next to it, and the "employee parking" lot behind. You'll need your own hose -- regular garden hose thread. I'd suggest that if you use that spigot you go inside and buy something, and don't fill your 8,000 gallon tank - just the 100.
The Quality Inn has spigots here and there around the building, but if you're not staying there Jaime, the manager, will let you know that you are NOT welcome to take his water. I don't know of others right off, but ask Mike Crawford at the CarQuest auto parts store on the far east end of Wendover, Utah. He's mayor and might know where to get some H2O, His sister and Linda work at the West Wendover Tourist Center and can probably steer you towards water. The KoA will certainly have water, even right at the entrance, not just the individual parking spots -- but they might frown on you fillinig if you're not camping with them. Ditto the new campground by the Nugget.
There -- that's a start for you. Oh, yes -- the truck stop at exit 4 has water, too. Some years it's been "Help Yourself", some years it hasn't. I don't know what this year portends.
Ok thanks just need 130 gallons or so............
If you're going to put the water in your camper vehicle -- last year Mike Crawford allowed folks with campers to dump their dirty water tanks at the brand-new sewer of the Museum parking lot -- free. Ask him if the deal is still available. I don't know if they've got fresh water there yet, although I've heard the parking/camping area has been expanded by five acres over last year. Free camping, of course.
Koa is 10-15 bucks for dump station and water fill up. It is near the front of the lot, across from the office. Pay first.
Slim,
Did Mike have spigot attached to a fire plug last year?
Some where I thought I heard something about that, or maybe just one of
those urban legends.
Part of the ambiance. :-D
After all, as Mr. Mayor, he can probably dip into the city slush fund and say "Good Will".
Jim
Talked to Mayor Mike the other day, he said they will have porta-pottys at museum for us. He said only the "Cool Guys" will be camping there!! So that's why me and my brother will be staying there!!!! See you guys at the BBQ Sat. at our Camping site. Please only "Cool Guys and Gals allowed) Hahahhahahha

After many years going to World of Speed this is the first time for me to SpeedWeek (thanks Freud for the suggestion!) I called to get a BNI membership, was told this close to SW to get it on the salt – BNI membership will get me all kinds of goodies, patch, poster, decals, news letter and..... the Bonneville Nationals Speed Week entry pin. My question how do I get on the salt to get that without that pin? I will be arriving Friday the 9th in the evening. To get off to a good start I did already print out Landsendlynda's "Lane Guide" posted earlier in this thread.
Thank you - Michael
Well, a bribe of donuts and coffee never hurts with Lynda. Or I wouldn't be surprised if you gave her the $15 for a one day pass, went in and got your BNI membership and package and pin and then returned to Land's End (on your way out that evening) and asked her for the money back. I think she's said she'd work it that way -- keeps you honest and her, too. Give it a try.

Finally ready to go!!!
Leaving for Brisbane Airport in 30 minutes,See you all on the salt!!!
I'll be in the tech area working,so come say g'day,,just ask for Kiwi Bob-really looking forward to seeing the Turbinater come through,,,

DLRA 200 mph Club.
Since it will be Friday when you arrive, as long as the salt is still open, you can go to the Registration trailer without pause!!! Tech days are free to the public. Since I have to account for the day passes, it's easier for me to "loan" my pin out until you can get your own. I do require a couple of things first though, you have to let me know what it is you are planning on doing and if it's on a race day, a small donation to Save the Salt!
If your arrival is after JoAnn has left for the day, you can get one after the driver's meeting on Saturday.
Ah yes, Saturday......Participants will be allowed on the salt as soon as I get permission to open the gate. Spectators will be allowed on the salt starting at 7 a.m.
Because my "Point" daughter is pregnant (YAY!!! FINALLY!!!) I will be on point Saturday morning after sunup. I'll have my reflector vest on and will be wandering up and down the road separating vehicles with orange stickers from the line of spectators. So, if you see me, I'll be guiding you to the Racer's Lane.
]REMEMBER......
DO NOT BLOCK THE EXIT LANE

Hi Guys - newbie here from the UK. I will be visiting for only 3 days 8th, 9th and 10th to visit the Salt for the first time.
There are a number of things I need to know -
1, Is there camping available and what are the facilities
2, Does anyone need a hand for a couple of days.
3, What food outlets are present.
4, Is there a cure for Salt Fever ???
I have accomodation in Wells but would rather be where the action is so any beds nearby would be welcome.
1. Yes open to primitive camping (tents) on the dried mud flats "at the bend", gets muddy very fast if we have rain.
Also camping at the future museum site just on the eastern edge of Wendover about 3 miles from the bend.
Porta johns available last couple years near the bend and bathroom and show facilities at the truckstops
2. probably
3. The salt flats cafe right at the highway 80 exit (at the truck stop) that takes you to the flats plus more just a couple miles away in Wendover
4. sadly no it is an incurable affliction who's only treatment is annual exposure to salt and sun during August and September. Some seriously afflicted take treatments into October.
Larry

SCTA Announces Audio Streaming of the 2013 Bonneville Speed Week Orosi, CA USA, July 30th Tuesday, 2013
Scott C. Andrews SCTA Secretary/Chief Timer
The SCTA wishes to announce that for the first time a live audio broadcast will be available through the SCTA website www.scta-bni.org. This is a first for the SCTA in officially releasing real time audio information from the famed Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah during this year's Speed Week.
Sponsors, fans, supporters and families of those in competition can join with the announcing staff consisting of Harold Osmer and Ron Christensen during the entire week of speed trials and record setting attempts this year. The SCTA is expecting in excess of 500 vehicles in competition to break those elusive and special SCTA Bonneville records and now you can hear the show as it happens live.
To hear this year's show simply go to the SCTA website www.scta-bni.org and look up the link under 2013 Bonneville Speed Week information. After you have clicked on the link you will be sent to a special page with the show streaming live.
The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) sanctions land speed racing trials in two locations. Racing is conducted six times each year at the El Mirage Dry Lake bed in Southern California and also the world renowned Bonneville Speed Week in August combined with the World Finals in October of each year at the Bonneville Salt Flats in northwestern Utah.

Dean:
Howzabout if I start a new thread for SpeedWeek -- some time early next week? I'll retitle this one (assuming it'll let me do so) as something like "Pre-SpeedWeek 2013" and the new one will be designated something to let all know that it's the one for putting "current event" posts on. Will that do it for youse guys?

Here's a "heads up" from a fairly reliable source.
Tooele County has been crying about running short on funds for about a year now.
It would seem they are Tango Uniform big time.
One slip on the banana peel and it's DEE-troit City all over.
That means "REVENUE ENHANCEMENT, AKA $$$$$$$$$ is the name of the game.
As has been noted here prior, do not exceed 45 on approach road to Land's end,
Do not have glass containers visible or litter.
If you are late to set up pits in the o'dark thirty hours, do not speed down the hill from Wendover center exit.
Johnny loves to hide under the bridge.
Camping at Mikes makes a lot of sense, since BLM is not happy with the situation at "Bend in road".
Make a full stop at Exit 4, near Intrepid, eastbound or going to the track.
A friend of mine got nailed there on his B'Day for a rolling stop.
What tree the MAN fell out of, we don't know.
Just common sense things.

And 1 more addition.....Seat Belts!!! They love to pull you over for seatbelts!!! when you hit the pavement at Land's End, get rid of any open container, fasten the seatbelt (across your chest, not behind your back!) cruise the road at 45 mph and come to a FULL stop at all stop signs!!!

First year I went to the Bonneville, I was driving just past the bend heading to the Lake and I remembered Lynda's and Slim's words
"don't speed on the road in"
So I was cruising along at 45 in the rental car, and a giant pickup came past me at about 75
the next thing to go past was the police. that was on the Thursday
Yep, they made some revenue that week

It's quite possible to have a "spotter" up on the hill with powerful binoculars, and a "Chaser" hiding around the corner on the road that runs up to the dump.
On a trip returning Eastbound, I saw something up on the top of the mountain by the Dugway exit and wondered, "is this a speed trap?"
Keep thinking like a cop, always!

At our USFRA meeting Wed. nite, one of the members had been to land's end that morning, and said "there was only a small puddle to deal with".

Dumb question of the day, do they accept plastic out on the salt say at the souveneir stands, or to buy a bni membership etc?
No such thing as a dumb question. Only dumb thing is not asking !!
QuoteFirst year I went to the Bonneville, I was driving just past the bend heading to the Lake and I remembered Lynda's and Slim's words
"don't speed on the road in"
So I was cruising along at 45 in the rental car, and a giant pickup came past me at about 75
the next thing to go past was the police.
Yep they get busy out there especially the first 4 days or so.
For those who are not sure what you are looking out for.

Latest as of 21:34 MDST, the next ten days are simply SPECTACULAR!
The folks from East of Denver will simply learn to deal with single digit humidity.

Scroll down past the finger thingy, and punch the little blue arrow for next 5 days thru Mon, 08/12.
nice!

The car is tagged and bagged for the trip to the white! Make sure you stop by my pits and say hello (or on the line). We typically have an assortment of cured meats and other various meat related sundries at our pits along with various beverages. We also do not discriminate for age, religion, race or other but be warned, we support and practice a 'clothing optional' pit. We do not however tolerate: scallywags, miscreants, heathens, hoodlums, scoundrels, vagabonds, carpet baggers, dentist or other criminal types....and more so people that dont have a sense of humor. If you need to borrow a tool and we are not at our pit you are welcome to take it. Just leave a note with your name and dont make me come asking for it.....after you are done with it return it. If I borrow a tool it always comes back nicer than it was when we got it.
Hope to see you all soon,
~JH
OK there should be SCTA streaming. Does anyone know if there will be CB or FM broadcast as well? Will they feed that same thing over these media? Just curious.
Should be FM. By the way, my Tank is in the trailer and I'm packing around it. :-D I'll leave Thursday morning after breakfast. Maybe have lunch at Marcello's. Wayno
Safe travels Wayno, see you up there
Darn Johnny, I was hoping to stop by, but have been told by a few people that I may either be a miscreant and/or a scallywag. Definitely not a hoodlum though! Hopefully I can still sneek in.
Howdy from Wendover and the Quality Inn. We made it!!!
Okay, now that that's over with, here are a few first impressions for the trip. I'll post my usual photo of salt conditions but will tell you that for right now it's kinda sticky/damp in the pits and on the entry road, but not bad. And with the 90F temps this afternoon -- the chances seem pretty good that it'll dry up well.

The guys (Jim Jensen and Fast Fred Dannenfelzer) are out dragging, as usual. I'll put a photo from Land's End on here so you know what to expect there - but again, it's not perfect but pretty good and will get better - if bumpier from traffic .

Guess who? Hint: She admits to welcoming donuts and hugs. Lynda, that is. Nancy will turn down the donuts.

I'm going to lock out this thread (for new posts) tonight or tomorrow and start one for the event itself (vs. the run-up to it). You'll still be able to read and refer to it - but for those folks wanting current information - a current thread should oughta be easier to navigate than this one that's been going on for weeks.
Okay - we're going shopping at Smith's now, for food for Salt talks (no, we don't buy the meat quite this early - just reserve it to make sure they've got it for us Sunday morning), and as well as food -- we're going shopping for (HERE'S AN IMPORTANT WARNING TO YOU ALL!!) we're shopping for a flyswatter or two. They're already being pesty. Be forewarned and bring fly strips if your pit and your personal fragrance is anything like ours.
Finally - the courtesy shot I always post. Two of 'em, in fact:

That's it. WE MADE IT! 1,885 miles, 16.0 mpg, three and a quarter days, 38 3/4 hours in the truck. No tire issues whatever, no interviews with the police. Not bad, hey?
Glad you made it safe Jon, good luck.
Wow, looks sticky!!!

Well, at least I'm not a dentist!
Slim, methink's that fragrance may be from devouring "excessive" Moose meat over the winter up in Frostbite Falls or wherever in hell you live. Good luck to Nancy, Yourself and everyone else. Have a safe Speedweek and I will see you all next year. One Run, out.....................
I told you so:

But some DO change - a bunch. . . This one was a shocker - 'specially considering the wreckage we saw last October:

1,885 miles / 38 4/3 hours = 47.92 mph :-P
Don :-D
Close, Don, but it was 38 3/4 hours. As for speed - well, I think we might have topped out coasting down a hill in central Montana where we hit the mid 70s -- but with throttle only we stayed in the lower 60s. Set the cruise control at 63 and get good gas mileage - and have time to hear an extra disc of the talking book.
Speaking of the trip -- here's one of the rewards of getting to Wendover before the event starts. Plenty of seating at the Salt Flats Cafe --- even for me, wearing a 2013 Salt Talks shirt.

Jon, we will be there Thursday evening.
As for the 4/3 VS the 3/4, I can only go on the info you give out.
I wouldn't want to try and second guess you.
See you soon, Don
Thanks for pointing out that typo, Don. It's all fixed now. See you Thursday or Friday, okay?
Well! Congratulations on a safe trip.
It wouldn't be a true Mexican restaurant without flies.
We saw some friends off at the SLC airport 40 years ago, and Marriot Corp was running the food (?) place on the 3rd level; Fly population was second only to skeeters in Alaska.
Enjoy, hope to see ya'll Thurs.
Jim
Sorry to disappoint you, Jim, but the flies were not in the restaurant.
