Title: Ear protection!
Post by: Tman on October 03, 2013, 02:12:19 PM
Since I was 20 I have kept a pair of gun muffs around the shop and on my carpenters tool belt. I never do anything loud w/o them. For Bonneville I use some of my Army issue earplugs that I keep in my pocket. I see so many folks not using pro and it bothers me. TV is the worst!

When I work on the alcohol cars at the drags, I always have a pair of those headband looking ear plugs around my neck. So if any of the cars around us fire up I have quick access to them. I went so many years without wearing ear protection at the drags when I was younger Im sure my hearing has been diminished due to it. Throw in a few dozen rock concerts and its no wonder I have any hearing left at all. Although my 3 days at SW I didnt wear any protection for some reason. If I was up near the line id just put my fingers in my ears.

When we fire up the truck I can actually HEAR BETTER with my plugs in. That is, I can hear the engine better, the loud drone does not drown out all the noises.

Trent's right about filtering out the noises you can't hear around.

Years ago, when I was playing in bands a lot more regularly, I had a custom set of high definition ear plugs made for me.  They were formed to my ear, and they have a little insert that simply diminishes the volume by about 20 db.  Clarity is excellent, and you can better identify problems in a noisy environment - like sharing a stage with our lead guitarist or piloting a tin can down the salt.  With the helmet on, it knocks another 5 db or so out of the equation when you're in a car.

They weren't cheap - about $300.00 - but I've been in the sound business for a lot of years, and unfortunately, many of my contemporaries who have done it as long as I have simply don't hear so well anymore.

As long as hearing jokes have been broached here -

How do you know when the band's sound man is at your door?
The door bell feeds back.

I was on Sam's a couple weeks ago and saw that their hearing center made custom ear plugs, some you could have speakers put in, for about $100.00 per set. Sounds like a good deal to me, if that's what your looking for.

See a lot of ear protection at the shooting range here. The one's with volume control are neat but not cheap, check the price of hearing aids and the ear protection is cheap.

You got that right. My hearing aids are really expensive!! I wear protection for anything that is even a little loud. I don't want my hearing to get any worse.

Those of us who have been around race cars for a long time will tell you that if you're smarter than we were you'll use it whenever possible. Some of us still aren't as smart as we could be!

I had a Mazda Rotary with open pipes behind my head for a few years.

There's a big fight here over the remote control as far as volume is concerned.

It's funny because I can hear stuff outside that she doesn't.

Ear plugs inside a helmet bug me.

Generally, your driving or riding ability will increase when the noise level is reasonable.  It is less tiring and it is easier to think and to concentrate on important things like shift points.

Sidebar comment:  I've raced with Scott Guthrie bunches of times -- and I've never seen him, at the end of a run, NOT take out earplugs.  That is -- he ALWAYS wears them.  I don't know if that's a career-long choice, but - well, he has held a few records in his time , so maybe there's something to the ability to think and react and concentrate when the noise level is under control.

always, I can hear better with them in, sounds odd but it seems to me that I can connect a sound to something I may feel easier.
