Hi Folks,
the other day we talked about Dick Keller's Blue Flame book - a book for us salt freaks.
now, if you look for a gift to someone who is not so familiar with our fun place....
Arcadiapublishing got a book series - Image of America - they asked Landspeed Louise to
write a book about the Bonneville Salt Flats
this is now available for 22 dollars - the title "Bonneville Salt Flats" - written by Louise with a foreword by Alex Xydias (I have not to tell who that is )
Louise was so kind to sign that book personal to me and now I got this book in my hand - 128 pages full with photos, to each photo she wrote a short story...
plus some longer notes, also about the lost of the salt over the last decades.
it is very well written and the photos, especially the old once, are excellent prepared - not simple the scan out of the newspaper....and starts with 1914 when they raced
the first time at the salt.
lastest when the reader comes to the last page he knows that the Salt Flats is a strange place...and he knows why we love that place so to fix our need for speeds
for the one who was infect before from this needs it is another interested book....it is not just a copy of well know photos....the reader will find a lot of new material.
it is worth the money....if you like it special....contact Louise and she will tell you how you get your autographed copy
a book for all and for the long winter time - especially in the current situation - enjoy
here the ISBN for the order
If you were going to buy one of the two books PorkPie mentioned, get the one on the Blue Flame. It reads like a super build diary on steroids! Everything that went on before, during and after ?The Flame? set records is clearly laid out. All of this coming from one of the principals of the project and one of our own, Dick Keller (Mayoman). A rare opportunity to get it from the horses mouth, so to speak. Get the book! You will not regret it.

If Santa (or is Mom and Dad, I never figured that out) gives you large denomination currency in your stocking I would add the two volume book on the life and times of Reid Railton (Man of Speed) who was involved in land and water speed projects (Campbell, Cobb, et. al.) and it includes some really interesting historical context, Brooklands race track, various beaches, German autobahn, early adoption of Bonneville, Hudson cars and etc.
I've suggested that my local library buy it:

Is yours open?
(Ours is not.)
Fifty years ago, October 1970, 3 young men from Milwaukee in their twenties, (Dick Keller, Pete Farnsworth and Ray Dausman) had created The Blue Flame rocket-powered automobile which set the world land speed record at 630.388 miles per hour, the first over 1,000 kilometers per hour.
Speedquest, Inside the Blue Flame is the story of our dogged determination to realize our goal. Each member of the team worked tirelessly to create a vehicle that would not only beat all land speed records, but our ?secret? hope was to beat the sound barrier too!
At the end of 5 weeks on the Bonneville Salt Flats, we shattered the world record with a top speed of 630.388 mph (1,014.656 kph), and were prepared to go even faster the next day when a snowstorm prohibited us from trying again. The Blue Flame and Gary Gabelich was the last American car and driver to hold the world land speed record.
The book is available from Amazon in softback and eBook formats.
