Title: My tongue jack broke...
Post by: rockracer on September 29, 2024, 07:47:09 PM
While hooking up my  6x10 cargo trailer,  my tongue jack was getting harder to turn and then it broke, slammed down to the ground.
Still have my toes. 😊
Done my best to keep it lubricated,  jacking it up all the way and greasing it or spraying wd40 , others.  It would like to rotate when no load on it,  use my foot to kick it back straight.
Figured you guy's would know the best brand to get and what to avoid.
Wish I could find something with a grease zerk.
Top wind vs sidewinder.  Mines a top wind.

Harbor Freight and others have power landing gears tongue jacks for $250 or less.  Spend the money and anticipate how much hassle it saves.  Mine hasn't suffered from salt or corrosion (yet).

It runs off truck 12VDC through the connector - no hassle.  Yeah, for a small trailer it's kinda overkill, but if you're going to spend a hundred bucks or more for a manual device - screw it.  Spend another hundred and go for the luxury.  You'll smile and think nice thoughts at me every time you use it.

I wouldn't use WD-40 as a lubricant. It works great to spray under your rig prior to salt exposure but not as a lube in the typical application. I read something a long time ago about someone using it to lube control surfaces on an aircraft that led to a failure. Silicone lube would be a better option. Just MHO.

Most of my life I worked in a machine shop. I'm sure most of you are familiar with an air bearing. We had a spin fixture for grinding with an air bearing. Someone lubed it with WD40 and next morning it was seized. I had to disassemble it and clean it with lacquer thinner to remove that crap.  I use it for NOTHING.

Yeah I just used it cause all I had at the time to cure the squeaking while rotating the handle.  I usually extend it out and smear grease around.
Looking online I'm surprised none of these have a zerk.  Kind of needed.
Dump trailers have a zerk but not smaller trailers

It's out and taken all apart.  Totally stripped out,  pieces of thread in the foot.  Now I have a better idea how it works and coulda just sprayed some  white lithium grease in from the bottom.
Gonna order a 5k unit cause overkill is cool,  right.
