If you happen to watch Steve Morse's Youtube channel you have probably seen this on his site, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSUMhzQuHG4. Steve is building a turbo Hemi for the next challenger in the first recip engine car to go 500. Pretty slick car.
Rex
Ah yes, that's Aaron Brown and The Garage Shop's build. Should be very cool to see.
ZZ
Thanks ZZ, looking forward to seeing this car at the salt, hope they make it this year. Where are these boys located?

NC former Nascar boys. They have a few Roadsters they run. Wayne has the Crvette, there is the Daytona and Talledega they ran in Time Only. Several red hats for being farly new to te salt. Very capable group.
I have it from a very good source that the budget on this car has no restriction on it like the Speed Demon has.
It would be fun to have something else at bonneville that can repeat 400+ passes like Speed Demon.
Jerry
Good stuff. Would be great to see another 400+ car running.
I miss the Target 550 updates. Would be great to get a full story of what happened at the DLRA meet and when they might run again.
Thanks
Tim
The critical questions . Will it have traction control and downforce ?
Good question John. Without either I don't think they have a chance at 500.
Rex
400 is a really big number at Bonneville let alone 500. It took Speed Demon, a lot of years, a lot of evolution & probably more money than everybody else put together to be where they are today.
Look at how long the Target 550 has been running & the ex Bobby Moore Maro Special now Jim Knapp liner has been running for even longer with patchy results, it's not easy!
Firstly to make it happen it's going to take a lot of consistent runs with reliability. Two or three runs per year or even per meet is not going to be enough, it's going to need to do laps.
Then if you've managed to build something that's fast enough, reliable enough & easy to turn around, you had better have addressed stopping that big pile of parts in a hurry to even think about going there. Now if you're looking for a record, do that twice in a row or even less likely within one hour for an FIA record! If anybody goes there they're going to be some special kinda "Right Stuff!"
Sid.
It's for certain the engine will have enough power. Steve Morris will see to that. He would know everything there is to know about traction control.
No one ever said if the car is four wheel drive. No ɓ
Maybe when Trump takes over Panama he can take Bolivia too, and eliminate the customs problem. :-)
I understand that the people doing this car are ready to spend what ever it takes to go fast, which of course means lots of dollars. I am wondering if they are maybe thinking about Bolivia just because the salt is thick, smooth and endless. It will be interesting to see where they go.
Rex
Bolivia is certainly the preferred location to put down some big numbers but as we've seen multiple times, taking an inconsistent bullet to the other side of the world it's still just an inconsistent bullet sucking up time & money. Then if you really have all your crap together, what's the chance of actually getting a successful meet to run at in Bolivia. So far it hasn't worked out very well at all.
Sid.

This car will be Throttle By Wire using motec. In the video Steve says the driver will put foot to the floor and steer the car. The Motec computer will control everything else.
Jerry
Lot of cool tech in the most recent engine video. Cam sync gizmo seized breaking cam gear etc. Only got it up to 3000+hp. More to come. Watch it suck the intake closed. Yikes!

Heck if its that type of power control system the driver is really there just steering. Heck why put anyone in the car just stand along the return road and control the car with some type of hand held controller :-)
Going really fast is simple but impossible without the right combination .
Peak traction is just before wheel slip . Drops off when wheel spin begins . Preset waste gate in each gear by trial and error . Like skating on thin ice . Sensing wheel slip / ice break through is too late .
Eric Ahlstrom told us that downforce from wings or low pressure beneath the body are equally efficient . Wings can be maximum downforce at medium speed . Moderated at high speed .
my guess is that it is using the wheel humps for down force at speed and they look equal size so I would guess 4x4. I am guessing a bottom that sucks also
I think that Steve Morse also mentioned that they have a 10 speed gear box. That with all of the control electronics is going to make this car a non stop challenge to keep it running. The Poteet crew were a great example of what it takes to be successful with a high tech car. They made lots of run, they had a professional crew and everyone of them knew their job and were very good at it. They were good to watch when they came to the starting line. Not much was missed although I did talk to a couple of their guys that said on the 487 mph run there was a programming glitch that caused the car to be in traction control mode for 13 seconds, i.e. not WFO, which could have possibly kept them from a 500MPH run.
The opposite of all of this high tech tomfoolery is Danny Thompsons car. No turbos, mechanical fuel injection, horse power controlled by nitro percentage ,minimum electronics, 3 speed transmission and traction control by Dannys right foot. On his last run he was almost 460 out the back.
Rex
Alot of what is going into this car was leveraged from the technolgy used on the Speed Demon but are going a little further with even more $$.
I sit here wishing it wouldn't have to use traction control, But i'm sure sitting inside with a turbo motor making north of 4000hp going over 400MPH. I would be glad it has it.
I'm a fan of Reg Cooks Kiwi Can Do streamliner He has incorporated the best aspects of the Speed Demon and Danny's car. First off his engine is turbocharged and is easily controlled as such. He has 4 wheel drive for the best traction and last, he has a very aero body shape that is very reminiscent of the Thompson car. To Rex's point he has a large qualified crew and a chassis dyno that will be on site. In the rarified air of Bolivia the turbos will make the necessary HP and the long course with little concern for slowing the car like the T550 has will work in his favor. I don't think he'll have any of the licensing concerns that the T550 had this year either. He has just acquired a bunch of tires and I don't think the fuel will be an issue this year. Truth be told, I'm a fan of all the over 400mph streamliners, but think the thin air at 1200 ft elevation could be the determining factor for a 500mph timing slip.
Question for everyone? Sounds like the computer on this car will handle the total control over the acceleration of this car. If that is indeed what it does, is it time to give the red, blue or black hat when the record is broken to the computer guru? Seems to me they are the one who is truly responsible for the outcome of the run and not the driver who is along for the ride.

On Danny's final run he got crossed up and out of the throttle for 5 seconds . If not for that the last mile average would have been maybe 470 .
The Garage Shop crew are all former Nascar people. I believe they have the crew part down. Money with the sponsors doesn't seem to be an issue. And, they have no issues spending days at a time in A2 wind tunnel. I am excited to see.
But.....want Sid to pull it off this year

I don't believe anybody has ever gone 400 at their first meet so that in its self would be a huge milestone. About 380 is where it starts getting a lot harder. We spent a lot of time with Betsy in the 380 to 400 range before we cracked it as did Nolan back then but SCTA didn't allow traction control at that time & engine management was selecting the right pill without burning it down. Then there was the old "qualifying run - down run & return run" for a record that separated the men from the boys! That's something I believe even Speed Demon has never accomplished.
Sid.
Goldenrod only ran in 1965 and went 400 on their 5th pass?
Not quite the first meet but mighty impressive.
5th run....well....when they was back in November....
the runs before wasn't that successful....the Hurst shifter was a troublemaker and the big dent in the nose due to the airpressure was also an issue....
Bill told me the whole story.....
Danny Thompson was the last piston engine driver in the old tradition...like Summers, Teague...a.s.o.....traction control by right food.....

After watching the video I am impressed with the way they are building the car. Man is it STOUT!!! Glad to see that they have been using the Speed Demon and the Fergusons for guiding advice, and his comment on how helpful the Bonneville "family" is in assisting each other in going fast is so true. It will be fun to watch them as they progress on the salt.
Rex
I wish them luck.
Nice to see another liner coming along.
I just read a HOT ROD mag. article on Speed Demon 3. I wouldn't be surprised if they go for 500 at Speed Week after shake down runs with their E engine. I hope Sid will there with his car.
Yep, it'll be there. Body panels redone & I'm fixing the fire damage.

That's awesome Sid. Go ya good thing. Kiwis are winners. God Bless you and have a great time. You're due.
The new Speed demon this Car/body has been 300 before, at Lake Gairdner ,
This wil qualify it for the Fast lane at the start line .
It also has a VIN stamped on it whuch makes for less paperwork for international racing

The car that Aaron Brown is building is a 100% new build.
Reg Cook just posted pictures of 5 containers on the way to Bolivia. He has 70 volunteers going along and is properly prepared. Three of the cars are contenders for :fridayFIA records, should be fun to follow
I'd be scared just getting there and back with all the problems that went before them. I wish them the best!
The Kiwis will overwhelm them with slang and make them their MATES. No worries
This will be interesting to watch!
I wonder what's going on with Target 550?
