section 3.D.1 of the Bonneville rulebook states that "All vehicles shall use a seat designed for racing." but I've seen pictures and videos of cars that appear to just have padding laid in the cockpit and a harness. I have to assume this is somehow allowed, but where in the rules is the buyout for it?
Am I just reading the rules too carefully?
I believe this rule came about because of the use of stock production seats in door slammers that collapsed, thus loosening seat belts, and leading to injuries. So racing seats in all cars. I'd say the generally special construction cars have "seats" that are built in to provide a place for padding and to sit, thus designed for racing, not anything resembling a stock situation. So i'd say yes, you are over reading it here. If you have any question though is best to ask the tech advisor for your specific class listed in the rule book.

"All vehicles shall use a seat designed for racing."
Doesn't say who has to have designed it :-D

No you are reading things into the rules that are not there...
That's a valid question. I know of a custom built carbon fiber seat that got the boot because it wasn't made out of aluminum...
I built an aluminum seat that I basically plug my body into, I designed it for "racing"! :-D
