I've finally come to the conclusion that it's time for me to let landracing.com move on. I can't do a proper job of running it. Anyone interested in picking up the mantle and carrying it forward? If I don't get a replacement I'll probably just let it go dark. I've had enough, I'm tired, and my health is deteriorating such that -- as I drove back from WoS a few months ago I had the bittersweet feeling that I wouldn't return.
PM me if you're in interested in taking over, okay?
PS: I have some moral reservations about whom I'll choose to get it. To summarise those: Trumpers need not apply.
Wow, low blow.
Low blow about trump? Not a bit. Any supporter of him isn't worthy of smelling my dirty socks, much less running this site. I've kept the site as clear of politics as I could for 17 years - but no longer. I can't stomach those jerks that think he's a human.
So now you think it's a good time to engage in politics?
Slim what wonderful Pontificating from someone who has grounds for such moral high authority
sorry to hear about the health problems
what Jon Amo started and you carried on will be sorely missed
Thanks, Bill. I appreciate your comments.
Did this work?
Well, now it did. I'll try again --- first time it didn't take.
It's no surprise that you're giving up the ghost with the site. We all know that you and Nancy have tucked away a bundle.
I'm a daily reader and would take it over if only I could learn how to make it work. (I've had a cell phone for several years now and haven't made a call yet.)
Lots of others, I hope, will step up and fight to keep it going. Probably anyone under the age of 80 can easily cash in.
But your best talents will surely not be beat. It's easy to know that no one alive can match the superb broadcasting that you did at SpeedWeek. Accurate and fun, too. And mastery of information and enjoyable listening.
And the art of Shit House Positioning will be hard for someone to find shitty shoes like you did.
Best of luck and health to you and Nancy. Don't be afraid to tell someone to go phuck themself -- that's the norm up high today.
Jon you truly have done a great job on running the site and I wish you the best of luck with your health issues. You have always been a pleasure to work with.
I was about to offer my help but it seems i'm not worthy. Take care.
Here's wishing you a slow and painful death...Non -Trumper eh?. Take your head out old man. Jerry .
Jon, I'm trying to recall when you took over Landracing, it had to be about 20 years ago, I believe you were doing Salt Talks to support the site well before acquiring it.
It would be sad to see Landracing go away, I'm hoping someone steps up.
Thanks for all that you have contributed, Don
Jon,
Thanks for all you have done to promote Land Speed Racing. This site has been the premier site for anyone who might be interested in this motor sport.
You have always done your best to keep the advertiser's down to products which we would benefit from. And I always appreciated that. I hope someone comes forward, with the qualities you are looking for, so this site can continue to be used by thousands and thousands of people who love Land speed Racing. There are way too many years of valuable information contained here to be thrown away.
Thank you again,
Tom G.

Jon, thank you for all your hard work on this website -- and, more broadly, all you have done for racers and their friends and families for many years. I have learned a lot and experienced a lot of enjoyment as a result of your efforts.
Here's hoping that someone will soon take over the duties of hosting here, because I believe that this forum is important, useful, beneficial, and valuable.
I wish for improvement in your health and vigor, and am reluctant to encourage any unfriendly words among our (historically) friendly land speed racing community.
I would like to second what tallguy wrote above.
Ronnieroadster
It will certainly be a sad loss if this forum goes away, it has contributed so much to so many over the years, including some of my crew & a lot of good friends. I have no talent or time to take on such a task, my time is consumed by trying to afford my big long pile of parts that shouldn't really exist on a pauper's income.
Sid.
Thank you so much for all your hard work for so many years. I check in daily but it has been a long time since my last post. This board and my experiences at Bonneville have been one of the high points of my life. I never dreamed, when I was reading one of those little hot rod magazines years ago, that I would actually experience and meet some of those people from the magazines. And then actually participate in land speed racing! Meeting you and Nancy in person, was a real treat.
Although I am a life long Republican, and the present administration has done some things that I agree with, I am not a fan of their attitude and methods. My opinion has caused problems with some of my very old friends. I believe this, "Bad things happen when good people don't stand up for what is right". Thankfully we can still speak out about our thoughts. I defend anyones right to disagree with me.
I hope the best for you, and for all the ones who posted here.
WZ you expressed THE POSITION that should be taken to heart and acted upon by every US citizen---- stand up and fight EVIL and wrong doing otherwise we will soon have no liberties and freedoms.
I am taking the time to download from the Texas SOS office a complaint form because on election day in a small rural polling place my civil right we violated because the poll worker would not check me in until I read a League of Women voters list of the Constitutional Ammendments and filled out a cheat sheet so that my time in the voting booth would go much faster. The Repulse. and the Dim. poll workers insisted even after I took issue with it.
They hadn't been trained properly broke the law by HAVING SOMETHING THAT NOT ALLOW IN A POLLING PLACE by anyone---much less hand it out and violated my civil rights by refusing to check me in before using the handout.

Jon, I have an idea that (hopefully) could help you connect with someone who
could help with running this website. But first, I want to make a $ donation.
I'm having trouble doing that with my credit card . . . and don't have a Paypal
account. Please advise. Thanks.
tallguy
Jon, sorry to hear about the health situation. Both of you take care of yourselves. So glad you guys got to stop the one time and see some of the country here.
You guys have been a tremendous asset to the land speed racing community. Bringing hundreds of us together and creating a resource like no other on the internet for our racing. Can't really say enough for all that you have given to all of us .
Thanks, take care and come back and visit if the opportunity arises :-).
Sumner
Jon, I am so sorry that your health is such a problem that you must give up the site. I have run and maintained several successful aircraft related forums and know it takes a lot of time. I hope you find someone to replace you and who can do an equally good job. To that end, it only makes sense that you included an intelligence test.
Don
This is an open suggestion, for what it's worth . . .
In order to attract a replacement person to run this website, it might be helpful
to provide more information about what running the website entails. For example,
how many hours of time per month, how often a "work session" of this should be
performed, and also some info about the economics of it all. This would include
actual costs to be paid, and also info about income (i.e., from donations).
Additional information that could possibly help attract someone who is considering
"taking over" might include guidance re: procedural issues, troubleshooting, where
to turn for technical support, etc.
Would it have to be just one person doing all the work? Might having a "team"
get the job done satisfactorily, if one person is "in charge", but the other(s) do
some of the more tedious (but not too complicated/difficult) tasks?
Generally speaking, money talks. If the financial reward can be quite substantial
-- for example, by stimulating an increase in donations -- , people could get
motivated to seriously consider stepping up. But I'm not assuming that there would
be a huge monetary payoff for the chosen person(s). I think of it as more like a
"labor of love" type of thing. Kinda related to a hobby, or passion, or something like that. Good luck to all concerned.

Huh ?
Do you mean that in a literal sense ? ... or is there some kind of [to me] hidden meaning to your statement ?
Jon: all this is horribly sad news
I absolutely defend anyones right to disagree with my political opinions. I would encourage them to explain their opinions and challenge what I believe. But calling someone names has no place in a discussion of politics. The current administration has a real problem with calling people names when they disagree. A very childish tactic. It usually means they have a weak defense.
This site has been a great resource for years and I'm appreciative of all the work thats gone into it.
Would you let a libertarian that trashes both teams have the reins? :-D
"Trumpers need not apply"?
That certainly suggests that you can defend Biden, Harris, Pelosi, Schumer, AOC, etc.
Rational thought has left the building.
Folks - getting back to the issue at hand, landracing.com is in need of a steward. I have zero web skills. Who out there in this great worldwide community called LSR has the knowhow, desire, and bandwidth to carry along this valuable torch? If interested, please state so.

It's a sad thing. When I finally got access to the internet, the first place I came to was here. This was the first forum I ever logged onto with a password. I've gotten so much out of it, it's really been great. But maybe it's time for the place to die. That would suck, for the whole landracing community - which is much bigger than it seems to be.

At Don's suggestion I contacted Jon on Facebook and we talked on the phone today. He said he'll check DMs and try to find the right fit. If anyone reading this knows anything at all about websites and could be a good steward reach out to Jon and talk through it sooner than later.
FYI Jon said its on hostgator and the minimum fees are about $100/yr, though years he recorded audio and made trips to the BSF cost more.

It?s really not much effort. Fairly simple to Migrate it to Discourse, a modern form. It looks like it is running on Simple Machine's, a dated free forum. I would migrate it to Discourse + enable AI moderation + preserve URLs. Runs about $120 to $130 a month. There is almost no management required maybe 10 - 15 minutes a day or less. It Auto-detects spam & bots, Flags toxic or rule-breaking posts, it Summarizes long threads, Suggests moderator replies, and Answer FAQs automatically. I would be happy to pay the monthly cost to keep it going and have the people that can do the migration if Slim or someone else wants to manage it. Or I might consider managing it.

Well said Sid. Going forward if some of you still need to get your 'feelings' out how about doing it in a different thread?
Mike thanks for the very generous offer in regards to helping with the site moving forward. Something that should be looked into. Two observations/thoughts in regard to it.
One is that I've been on Discord for a couple years via another interest. I find the format puts off a number of people who frequent more conventional forum formats such as this one. Once one get use to it it is easier to navigate. Also maybe it is the way the Discord channel I use has been set up. I find that it seems less friendly for users to start new topics and the flow is different. There again I've only used the one Discord channel and maybe there are other options on how one could be setup.
My second thought is that in the long run down the road a ways if the site has to find funding to keep it up can it generate $120-$130 a month ($1500 a year) to keep the site up. I wonder if Jon has had that amount come in reliably yearly to this point. Unfortunately a lot of users on forums see them as free and don't see the costs associated with keeping them up and also the amount of work that entails. I'm wondering if there are other options out there that don't cost quite as much?
I was paying around $300 a year to keep my site up. Then moved it and now it is about $200 a year. Some years donations cover that but most years they don't. I don't have near the traffic on it as most forum sites so not sure what is reasonable to expect to pay for a server that hosts a forum. A quick search shows that maybe $25-$30 a month might get one some basic hosting with commercial software for the site.
Just to get this out there.....at 82 I'm not interested.....but hope someone steps up and maybe your the one Mike?
Sumner
@ Sumner I made the same mistake of thinking Discord = Discourse as I also go to Discord occasionally. The latter looks like a nicer prebuilt solution, but pricey.
I think that $1500/yr might not be terrible now, but the beauty of this site is that it has been THE land speed archive for such a long time. There's not even a reddit space for it. Facebook is neat and flashy, but is so hard to go look back at prior content. I think it has to be a low sustainable price to survive the low interest/donation periods.
Disclaimer: I'm not a racer, I'm a huge fan of LSR, always have been.
I really like reading this forum.
I agree with the suggestion that politics don't belong here.
I'm not a fan of Discord.
There are better Forum packages out there, especially this one: https://xenforo.com/

Discourse is a totally different from Discord. Discourse Pro is a modern site that retain all the data from the old site. AI takes most of the management work out of it. My offer is to commet to pay for the cost of the site as a service to the landspeed comunity. I would not ask for any donations. Might want to put one of my company names as a Sponsor of the site.

Watch this page for an exciting announcement!
Well folks, I'm the chosen one.
First off, let me say that I'm honored that Jon has shown the faith in me to take over the Landracing.com website. I know that for the past 20 plus years, he's been the guy that kept it going and allowed you all to have a platform to discuss the world of land speed racing. My intent is to honor his legacy and keep it going for years to come.
Here's a little about me. I'm a Southern California native who grew up loving just about anything that went fast. I had guys in my neighborhood with hot rods and drag boats. There was a sign painter that lived on the corner who was always busy lettering and pinstriping cars. We raced our Sting Ray's like we were Malcolm Smith and jumped trash cans like we were Evel Knievel! Needless to say, the car culture was always a thing, and you couldn't help but to be influenced by it.
Fast forward a few years and in my professional life I was a career parts guy. I started as a delivery driver at a small Italian car dealership in Santa Monica and ended up with a 40-year career in the parts business working for one of the largest European parts importers in the country. It was a great run that allowed me to meet people from all over the globe. I left the parts business for good in 2023 and have spent the past few years travelling and working on the many projects that have built up over time. I still have a base in Southern California and am a short drive from El Mirage, Famoso and Willow Springs. Plenty of opportunities to get my fix!
Also, I spent 10 years as a volunteer with the SCTA. I didn't get to the Salt until 2011. You would think that a kid growing up in SoCal would have made the pilgrimage before he turned 50 but it wasn't so for me. As most who've encountered the hallowed ground known as the Bonneville Salt Flats, I was awestruck. So much so that I?ve gone back almost every year since. As a volunteer, I worked with Dan Warner from 2014 through the 2016 season and in 2017 I became the official Record Certification Officer. That lasted until 2024 when the SCTA Board decided that a change was in order and a new Impound Chief was appointed. I had the time of my life helping racers achieve their racing goals and am proud of what I accomplished during my tenure.
And that brings me to the new role ahead. My goal as the new owner of the website is to make sure that Jons vision is kept intact. I don't intend to get heavy handed, but we must all admit that there are some needed updates. The front page of the site is where the most work is needed and that will come over time. The forum's will be pretty much left alone but there will be enhancements. Mostly in the background and they should improve your experience.
I hope you will give me some input on what you'd like to see as it is your community. I'm just here to enhance it.
Feel free to contact me through the website for now. I will have another dedicated email address set up soon.
Best regards, Mike
Awesome! Congrats and Thank You!!!
At last, the giant sucking sound has stopped!
Congratulations from the UK. See you on the dirt or the salt / mud.
Congrats Mike, You will do great!
Mike,
Many thanks for what you have done for land speed racing . . . and also, future thanks for what you will do.
Best wishes, and good luck to you.
Exciting news! I agree on the homepage. This site, and particularly the forum is such a wealth of LSR information. It's encouraging to know it'll continue on in good hands.

Great news my advice is to migrate it to Discourse. It is a modern format that takes much of the management out of it. See my posts #39 and #47 on this thread. My offer still stands.
Thanks Mike.

Mike who?
Mike Kaehny.
Thanks Mike, I'm relieved that all this history and information will be maintained and continue to grow. Best of luck during the takeover transition.
Many thanks to Jon W, I hope to see you & Nancy on the salt or dirt again someday. Maybe with a Kawasaki?
Also, thanks to the site founder, Jon Amo, who started this board way back when. Not sure if he (or Joe) stops in anymore.
Cheers,
Dean
Great news!
It would be great were the new forum software to ease the limitations on the size of images uploaded. While I know disk storage is not truly free, other forums I'm on don't have these sorts of limits.
Also, let us know how we can (financially) contribute.
Thanks
Tim
Thanks, Mike.
I'm glad that this forum will be passed on -- and am sure that you'll be a good caretaker. I would have tried as a last resort, but with my skills, I'm down to being able to just get a comment put together. Thanx for using the Teague photo -- it's the best one I've ever taken. Someday I'd like to give you a call regarding record certification -- just to share a rare experience.

Thanks Jim. You took that photo? Holy smokes!! It's an iconic image!! I'd like to get a copy and have Teague sign it!
Yeah -- you just had to be there. I'm no photographer, but I can see a good one when I do. I shot that one day, way back when it was, and after I had it printed, I had an 8x12 made of it (now like right over on the wall looking as I'm typing). I made an 8x10s to give to him after the next meet. And all of the team wanted one, too. So, I made some more. And since it's been on covers and magazines and whatever.
You have to tell that the way back then you had to push start the car and loop it back to the starting line and stop and push it off.
I never really knew Al, but like my friend Steve Batchelor and I, we'd try to help fund with devotions at Bonneville. Years later (just a few years back), I ran into Al at the LA Roadster show and we chatted for a couple of minutes. We both had been in the Army and Vietnam at the same time. What a nice person! (His Model A was way faster than mine.)

Well this is great news Mike your certainly the guy who we all feel great about taking over this great forum. Every time we made it to impound your support and the professional way you went about the certification process was as enjoyable as the runs we made to get to impound.

Congratulations to Jon for finally getting to retire from the responsibilities and aggravations of this site!
And congratulations and thanks to Mike for taking it over!
I do agree with others that this platform is aged and there are much better ones out there. I am sure you will choose well!
