I've been following this trend for more than 60 years, starting when I was told
that some car had achieved 150 miles per gallon.  The world record has increased
quite dramatically, as the vehicles competing have, of course, gotten smaller,
lighter, and more streamlined.  I have seen the mileage increase to hundreds of
miles per gallon, then into several thousand miles per gallon of gasoline.  Yes, these
little things go slowly, with a lightweight driver.  Very sophisticated things, fer shur.

About 20 years ago, I read that the world record was in excess of 7,000 mpg.  That
was kinda hard to believe, but I believe it was possible.  Then I happened to ignore this contest for more than 10 years . . . until very recently, when I read that in the 2011 contest, a vehicle entered by students from a university in Milan had achieved a mileage of 22,900 mpg.  That's right, 22,900 mpg (no typo).  I find this difficult to believe, and am looking for information that would help substantiate this claim.  So far, I have failed to find any . . . such as photos of the vehicle, technical specs (such as its weight), etc.

So I will remain skeptical until I see more info about this.

I realize that this hardly relates to land speed racing.  But there are plenty of
"gearheads" with an impressive lot of knowledge and experience in this land
speed racing community, right?  If anyone here is interested in helping research/verify this mpg claim, I'd appreciate seeing supporting evidence.  Cheers.
