Most of those I've seen are open at the back, and therefore don't encourage the air that goes around them to smoothly "close".  I have seen one vehicle that keeps these cans enclosed during the timed part of a run, prior to deployment of the chute(s).  If I remember correctly, it was a motorcycle streamliner . . . (I think it may have been either the BUB streamliner or Ack Attack.)

I'm wondering how problematic it would be to have tapered, aerodynamically-shaped "caps/covers/plugs" to provide for smooth closing of the air.  Yes, these items would need, after deployment, to stay isolated from the chute(s), in order to not damage the chute(s).  I can imagine the caps/covers/plugs preceding the chute(s) in similar fashion to what a pilot chute does.

It was likely the Ack Attack motorcycle streamliner you are thinking of, although Tom Burkland's & Vesco's Turbineator streamliner has closed doors around the paracuhtes also. Mike removed the doors on the motorcycle streamliner when they were found to create rider instability. Rockey (the rider) was having trouble controling the vehicle after the doors were installed. He oppened the doors a small amount & the instability went away.
Aerodynamics is not always what we think it should be...  muutt

Did not the Summers Bros' Goldenrod have an enclosure over the 'chute tubes that was launched prior to deployement??
I`d never advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...But they work for me.

My chute tubes are part of the aero package to help close the air behind the car. The tow lines don't go through the tubes, they are attached to the chassis right behind the diff inside the tunnel to eliminate chassis leverage arm length. I don't take pics of my junk since I know what it looks like   but you can see them in this video, there's 6 of them.
