Coming from a dragracing background, I fully understand the reasoning for using a high speed lockup clutch to deliver maximum drive to the rear wheel, where adhesion is at or near 100%,,

What is the reasoning with motorcycles for the use of a high speed lockup clutch, given that the adhesion at the rear tyres contact patch "on salt" is always minimal at best ??

I think even under the best of salt traction (hard, dry), a special type of clutch is not needed. My bike has a lot more power than the rear wheel has traction. No problems with a stock clutch.  I have spun the rear wheel at 240 mph. So far the only traction control I have is my right hand.

So to answer your question, I think spending money on a special lock up clutch is wasted.

I agree with you Don, 100%,,

There are a number of +200mph bikes that run high speed lock-ups, it would be interesting to know their reasons why ??

When drag racing we used a slider clutch with a lockup and air shifted with an ignition cut so the clutch stayed locked up. Saved on clutch wear. On our lakester use a clutch cylinder only at the line and shift with ignition cut

And very heavy duty clutch springs... because we are an 1800 lb vehicle with a bike motor... and clutch
Some of the very heavy bikes with lots of HP require a little more than stock clutch, even on salt... you want your  tire to be the part that slips, not your clutch.  That is the part you can control... so a positive clutch is required.
I know guys that use a slipper/lock up... they mostly use them to get their heavy, high speed geared bikes off the line.  So if you have one of those you might need a specialty clutch...
