I'm interested in the concept of running an internal combustion engine after it's been sitting,
unused, for several years.  This application is not about a race vehicle, but I thought that maybe
someone in this community would have some useful knowledge about this, and be willing to
share it -- so thank you in advance.

I think we all know that gasoline "ages" and tends to deposit some kind of "varnish" onto parts
of a fuel system (such as a carburetor, or injector nozzles?), thereby compromising the
performance of an engine.

Is there some kind of internal-combustion-engine fuel that is residue-free while sitting (even if
some evaporation takes place) for years?  Perhaps some kind of alcohol, or something like propane?
This would be for emergency power generation that would need to dependably work even if the local
grid is down -- i.e., as a result of a wildfire.

Always best to drain the fuel for really extended periods!

Tallguy,

There are are several generators made now that that run on gas or propane fuels with a flip of a switch. That might be your best buy.

Asking questions is one's only way of getting answers.

I'm interested in a fuel that doesn't need draining.  An empty fuel tank is not an option in this case.

The "propane" part sounds good.  I'm thinking of a scenario in which nobody would be
around to flip a switch.

Here is a link to a tri fuel unit that you can see how it works. There are other units that are for homes that have transfer switches if that is what you mean when you say nobody would be around to flip a switch. This type of unit would be for when you were around and the power went out.

So do you want one to automatically come on when the power goes out? If so I would go to a natural gas unit or a propane unit if you are out in the country and have no natural gas. Those kind of home units can get pricy but are all automatic if the power goes out and you are gone, they have a transfer switch that turns the generator on and transfers the power from the generator to your house, so your refrigerator, AC, and everything else will still work.
