You weren't and only child by any chance Stan?
Get off the stove Grandad.  You're too old to be riding the range.

Old Scrambler

During BUB in 2011 the down-end of the short-course was dry. Between the 1 and 3 mile markers the course became grainy and you could read tire tracks all the way through the timing section. At the 4 mile it became moist and sticky. On my last return run I had my visor cracked open a little to get to the starting line. Salt from the edge of my front tire got to my eye but I was able to wipe it away.

Aside from traction ...

When you do a run, you turn off the course, then you stop in the middle of the Bonneville Salt Flats.  You shut down, and climb out.

There is nothing else on earth that I've seen that is comparable to it.

It is truly surreal.

While the excitement, technology, personalities, and history, are down near the start line, being out there on the salt after a run is something that is very hard to describe.

To me being at the top end feels like a time machine. Even at 200+ you make a 5 mile run, slow and turn off just before the 6, find the return road and stop, gather your thoughts, get out, remove gloves, helmet , jacket, pick up the chute and put in the car, begin to drink a water when your support crew is just now pulling up to get you after you just left the starting line at the same time as them. Always seems a little weird to me.

It's kind of hard not to have a yell ..it's so friggin quiet and you're running about 10% blood adrenaline content....

they are the bits I remember much much better than the runs, the runs are a blur...bang bang bang( no suspension, sitting in an unpadded seat an inch and a bit off the salt) with a motor right behind your head......

GET ME BACK THERE
Few understand what I'm trying to do but they vastly outnumber those who understand why...................
