Heading for Coniston next week to attempt a water speed record

WZ JUNK

Good luck.

I visited Coniston 4 years ago.  Magical place with an interesting racing history.

I also visited Pendine Sands on that trip.

Thanks, aiming to average 75mph although maybe a bit ambitious! Would love to hit 80

It's an amazing place, has an almost mythical feel to me, much like Bonneville which I have to get to.
Hoping to climb the old man of Coniston this time too

That was a nice rabbit hole...
So Water Speed is like land speed... different class boats by motor size?
Looks like you've kept the piston guys in business  :?
Good luck next week  :clap

When in coniston make time to go cruise on the steam powered gondola .
I spent most of the cruise just watching the V Twin engine at work . and they make an anounsment when they are over where donald cambell when down .

Probably should have said, it's one of the longest threads on the forum  :-D

Yeh various categories for different styles, weights, lengths and engine capacity. Although most are very outdated, so I'm simply going for the worlds fastest thundercat.

Cheers!

I think it stops running before records week, wouldn't fancy coming across it's wake at high speed!
Did they not recover his remains a few years ago along with bluebird?

The museum contains a lot of information and displays depicting the achievements of the Campbells including the remains of the boat that Donald lost his life will attempting to back up a new record.  I would recommend a visit to this place if you ever visit the British Isles. Sorry about the poor quality photo but I did not take many that day, and I wanted to show something of the museum.

Not only water speed lovers but land speed lovers too. If you are coming to the UK you may wish to contact like minded people through the Speed Record Club (SRC), who can help direct you to the most appropriate locations. The SRC can be contacted through its website (www.speedrecordclub.com) and it is on facebook (www.facebook.com/speedrecordclub). If you want to meet National and World land speed record holders on two or more wheels and on water introductions may be possible.

The entire story is way too long to recount here, but... the Museum and a group calling themselves "The Bluebird Project" are in a bitter dispute over the now-restored Bluebird K7, which was salvaged from the bottom of Coniston and painstakingly rebuilt to running condition.

A couple of Web searches will lead you to the relevant web sites, including recent statements by both parties on where things stand.

Malcolm - I joined the Speed Record Club, got a few FastFacts mags (pointed there by Pork Pie) and then nothing - no renewal reminder - are they still functioning?

Sad but interesting story.  Both parties were interested in the boat but they have different views of what was to be done with it after it was restored.  I tend to lean towards it being functional again rather than a pile of pieces of wreckage.  But then I feel the same about old cars and hot rods.  I would rather see one driven daily, with bugs in the grille and radiator and a few scrapes and paint chips, than a perfectly restored one on display in a museum.

Pork Pie has filled in some of the background to the membership 'year' of the SRC. If you have problems then do send me a private message and I will see that information is passed to those in charge. As an 'active' member we should do a write up about your project - now I wonder who might get that task???

The legal profession has now become involved in the Bluebird K7 saga, instructed by the Ruskin Museum.  Everything changed after the Crew Training Exercise in 2018 held on Loch Fad, Isle of Bute in Scotland.

Right.  I followed the restoration for a while - cool project!  - but lost track at about the time they started arguing with the museum.   Just read the respective Open Letters / Statements of Position and then the apology / hang-on-a-second from the restorers, issued after they started (and stopped?) cutting up the boat.

I have the T-shirt but haven't worn it in a while, I'll have to dig it out.  No one around here gets it, of course.

Thanks
Tim
