Minor Fuel Explosion & Fire..............while next inline to run!!!

All are OK but no runs.............Some body-panel damage and several flying fasteners. Three fire extinquishers did the job. They got Sid out in seconds :-) :-) :-)

It was a pretty big bang that did some serious body damage & one of the flying panels hit Marty (aka Mr Shimstock on the forum) in the head right above his right eye. He has a real shiner today but is lucky the panel hit him with the flat side not an edge. Some say the top fire access panels went 20ft in the air. It bulged out the side panels about 4" & they were all held down with 1/4 20 countersunk screws, some of them sheared off, some tore out & some pulled through. The .090" aluminum belly panels were held on with 3/16 stainless rivets & they blew out. There's a lot of body damage & burned up wiring all caused by a pin hole in a -8 braided hose going to the left fuel rail. We start it from the engine panel where the fuel & oil primers are located then switch it over to the driver once it's running. It was warming up for about 10 seconds when I heard it go rough & right at that moment one of the crew was setting up a gopro on the hatch dash & bumped the ignition switch by accident & shut it off. The restart was what ignited the fuel explosion.
This is the end for me this year as I've run out of money & time for this much repair. Thank you to the people who came a long way to crew for me, sorry you didn't get the reward you deserved for all your hard work. The liner is home again now & tomorrow I'll start the cleanup & get the nose & tail off again to get it back in the short shed.
  Sid.

Wow, that is so sad to hear.  Glad You and Marty is ok.  Cars can be fixed.

I caught the two videos your mate posted.
I watched the 8 hour live feed all night here.
I was looking out for you man.

So sorry you had this mishap. Glad you guys are OK.
The last guy on earth that needed this.

You're as hard as they come. You'll be back.🙏🏻✝👊🏻💪🏻

Sorry guy's,  I had to edit the video and re-upload it.  I missed someone's name even though I went over the video hundreds of times.
Here's the new link.

Even though it wasn't my camera in there I was weary about it interfering in the cockpit.  From now on no cameras inside period.
Just less hands in Sid's office.
In a way I guess it was better than finding out on the track.

Marty wasn't feeling well early this morning so I took him to the ER where they checked him out & did a CAT scan of his his head. He is ok & it turns out he doesn't have any cats in there & didn't lose any more marbles!
The liner is washed down & ready to be squeezed into the short shed again but a thunder storm drove us off so it's getting a few more rinse cycles over night.
Thanks for the video Frank but you need to get a thinner lens for your camera, that one makes me look fat. aktion086
Thank you to my crew, Bones from Aus, Marty & Burton from Wisconsin, Mark, Jim, Gus & Frank from Utah, G-Man from Reno, Steve from Idaho & Nellie from Morocco. I couldn't have done this without you guys.
  Sid.

Mr. Schimstock

There's marbles in there?   :?  You said my head was empty when we were at the ER!

Glad to be back in WI. Swelling seems to be lessening and pain is minimal. I think I'll recover without issue and be back on the salt soon.

Let me know when you are ready to go back Sid.  I'll come help on your crew again.

I seem to remember the 16yr old doctor kid saying he didn't see anything, so I took that as empty M8! :-D

I ran the borescope down the inside of the fuel hose that leaked & could see a blemish on the inner wall so I cut it in half lengthwise to see what had happened. It was a manufacturing defect in one spot & the rest of the hose was good. It sprayed high pressure fuel on the left side coil packs so that was the detonator. Not really anything you can predict or plan against but the outcome could have been a lot worse than it was. There were a lot of people gathered around us when it went bang so I presume there is video of it somewhere so share it if you can. Frank (rockracer) has some but he missed the explosion.

If someone wanted to PM me with that . I have a video in production I could put it in .
Sid.  I felt like a fat boy trying to get in your race car but thanks for giving me that opportunity.  The little kid in me was like "this is so cool  !!!".
