Mr. Schimstock

I have seen many teams running Goodyear Frontrunners instead of the LSR tire.  Myself included.   I'm looking for the general consensus on the speed the front runners are good for.

Thanks,

During Inspection this year the word was Goodyears at least 225.  We have personally used the Moroso front runners previously setting the record at mile three at 225 MPH  Our experience has been a number of runs over 220 with both the Goodyear and Moroso front runners with  no issues at mile three four and five.

Working in the shop I use the 'F' word a lot. No not that word these words Focus and Finish go Fast and Flathead Ford!

When I went thru tech at SW with a car that the record is 237mph, they told me I couldn't run the Morosos. They said I could only go 200 max. I bought the GY 300mph tires.

I?ve run the M & H 24?s to 216.. I think they are a good directional steering tire. They were old (20+ years) so I decided to install a new set for 2023. We did take some licensing passes then and ran 2024, the sidewalls have so many splits I?m throwing them away. My 45 year old Firestone Bonneville look better.

PS. I personally know that M&H?s ground smooth have been 300+ on a lakester.

This year at Speedweek while going through tech I was told that my MT Front Runners on my MMP would need to be changed to Landspeed tires if I was to go over 200mph. The inspector alluded to the MT tires are questionable but GoodYear stands behind their front runners so they give them a bit more leniency? This was just one of a couple "new" things I was called for by the inspectors this year, even though I haven't made any changes to to the truck in recent years.
It would be nice if there were some hard rules around this as the rule book just says tires designated for racing by the manufacture are required for speeds over 200mph?

Maybe the issue is goodyear sends folks to SW and the other tire guys are not represented... they are getting one opinion...
I was introduced to a goodyear engineer at SW... he was being given the tire abuse tour by one of the officials... I guess maybe because my front tires are goodyears....

Although I have not seen a speed number, the MT website says their front runners (not every one but most IIRC) are "approved for land speed racing>"

Thanks,

Many years ago when there were no high speed tires available, and Goodyear Frontrunners became available, I was told someone had a letter saying they were good for 300 mph. That was many years ago. I am sure they are not rated for those speeds anymore. Now they produce true landspeed tires. It would be interesting to ask the SCTA what the speed limit on the Goodyear Frontrunners are now.

Yes JD, Carr and Kaplan ran shaved M+H tires on the front of their Lakester when they made their historic 306 pass on El Mirage Dry Lake Bed. I was there that day.

I love the USA. How much longer will we be a free nation?

Asking questions is one's only way of getting answers.

The rational person lets verified facts form or modify his opinion.  The ideologue ignores verified facts which don't fit his preconceived opinions.

I had M&H front runners on my 'liner and went over 272 ( I think exit was closer to 285) with them. I think same were on the car (one had rubbed with a nose change and was replaced) when Jim Knapp went over 300 with it.

Did the JCB streamliner use front runners on their 350 mph record run when they used fresh tires on each run ?

They look a lot like LSR tires to me...
hey they look fairly wide, maybe the same ones John and Troy run   :-o

From a quick Google, they were "23x15 Goodyear" tyres (tires).

So probably all four were the same size - seems plausible since Dieselmax was four wheel drive.

Thanks,

30 yrs ago in 1994 world of speed the 222 AA/BGALT ran 288mph with a 279 exit speed with Goodyear frontrunners.
This was with regular frontrunners before they had the 300mph rating.

I was told by a rep at MT that now that Good Year owns them, they are told to push people to the GY LSR tires - parent company bullying tactics.

I know for a fact that cars have run as fast as 380mph on shaved front runners. I don't blame the SCTA for wanting to prioritize safety. Shaved (sipe) tires are well know in the LSR community and should be allowed to at least 250 mph. I have run them 278 on my lakester with no drama If you remove excess rubber on the corners they don't throw it off at high speeds and problem solved..
