A question about the rules (i.e., for speed week)

This is about oxygen enrichment of the atmosphere that is flowing into the air scoop of a race vehicle.
If liquid oxygen is on board, and allowed to evaporate, subsequently being vented to a location in the path of the air scoop
(even if not being totally enclosed in a closed pathway), is the oxygen necessarily considered a "fuel" for purposes of the rules?
In other words, would the vehicle necessarily be classified as a "fuel" vehicle?

Sounds like a tuning nightmare to me. Per rules 3.E and 3.I.2 you can't put them in the drivers compartment. I heard somewhere that a racer wanted to use hydrogen or something similar and was required to park their truck way away from the pits. Just in case. Or similar stupid rule (what about the welding tanks folks might have- I guess the inspectors don't find out about them.) Carry on.

That'd be the fuel cell car that Ford built and Rick Byrnes drove.  He got a red hat out of it, too.  The H2 tank truck was parked way the heck on the far side of the pit area.  I don't recall the year.

As stated... it would be a tuning nightmare... you want more O2, that is what N20 is for.  02 in not a legal additive... I can tell you the added 02 in N20 is easy to balance.  Build something and race... if you want to use 02, build a rocket

if not liquid oxygen, how about using compressed air to pressurize the airbox?

jacksoni

If speaking SCTA and such that becomes supercharging and by definition (rule 4.FF ) must be by exhaust (turbo) or engine driven (belts and such). As you probably know a compressed air supercharging system has been developed and  works but length of time (bottle size) available would be an issue. More a drag deal I think. Ford's campaign was in 2007, but not only the Ford car, also the Buckeye Bullet was configurate, to use that stuff and Roger Schroer set a record with that.
Rick Byrnes run over 200 mph with the Ford, but he had his red hat before....and yes, the trailer with the tanks was far out, close to the mountains, behind the pits....

That's sort of what I have heard anytime somebody tries it. Lots of broken parts and no HP just like anytime you badly miss the tune up. Though as SSS points out, O2 is not an "approved fuel" (at least not listed under approved fuels in rule 1.U. However the rule reads "examples of" so not listed things might be used.  In a gas class, oxygenated gasoline and other O2 carrying chemicals like alcohols, N2O, nitro etc put you in a fuel class anyway. And of course N20 is not a "fuel" but an oxygenator so if that is legal if you can figure a way to make it work you ought to be able to get it by. But if in some way you made this work would be in a fuel class. ( of course you likely would run into the inspector who says, ignoring the language in the rule book, "our/my interpretation is......).  :dhorse: 1drink

I won't mention any names but was told by a person who did try and run oxygen at Muroc back in the day that he melted a lot of 94, and 97 Stromberg carburetors before they gave up on the project.

Many years ago a Dragracing Pro Stock team got caught using Nitrous Oxide, when the motor blew up and the bottle came out of the oil pan.

In the interests of historical accuracy ....

I think Rick Byrnes/Ford was in 2007 and he did not set an official record.  Did make a run at 200+mph, which was probably the first by a hydrogen fuel cell car at that speed.  Ford may not have been interested in setting records - just wanted the publicity from being able to claim 200mph.

Buckeye Bullet ran with hydrogen fuel cell power from 2007-9 and set several FIA records (fastest at a little over 300mph).

2007, yes, sorry...that was a typo...

in the other hand, there is nothing which said, that Rick set a record with the Ford car....Ford only liked to show what is possible...

it said, that Roger set a record....with the Buckeye Bullet

Ford claimed a record:

Quote from: Ford Motor Company
WENDOVER, Utah, August 16  Ford Motor Company [NYSE: F] today became the world's first automaker to set a land speed record for a production-based fuel cell powered car. The Ford Fusion Hydrogen 999 fuel cell car raced to 207.297 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah to set the record.

And it seems nobody told them about the FIA.

Pork Pie is right 2007, and my red hat was earned back in 1998 with my Merkur.
Ford hired me out of retirement early that year to help make sure the car would meet all the requirements of SCTA.
There was no class for this kind of vehicle so it was run as Time Only.

It was a project that I am proud of.  The scientists and engineers were incredible, as was shown when racing and provided me with a really neat machine.
