I'm helping a friend prepare a bike for this year's BMST.  She intends to run it in the Production frame class.  We have questions about what we can do to refurbish it (it is in serious need of some refurbishment!) while keeping it within the Production frame class.  Is there a place or a person we can get answers we can rely on?

(I've FB Messengered Delvene and emailed tech@bonnevillemst.com, but haven't received any kind of a response yet.)

You can also look at the rulebook and scrutinize the Production class section. It tells you what production means. In my world, if the rules don't say you can't do it, then you can. Here is the link to the rulebook. AMA Rulebook

Go to page 319 and it will tell you what the bike must be in order to be Production.

Thanks Don, good advice.  I often tell folks the same thing.  :-)

I've been reading and rereading the rule book for years.  But "Production class motorcycles shall not be modified from original equipment at time of manufacture" leaves lots of room for interpretation that only experience (like yours) or a word or two from the scrutineer(s) can answer, maybe especially in vintage and classic classes.  Our questions ALL had to do with how strictly "shall not be modified from original equipment at time of manufacture" (like painting or powder coating wheels that left the factory chrome plated, or reupholstering the original seat) were enforced in practice.  But thankfully, after asking everyone we could think of, we do now.

Thank you Don - and everyone else who contributed to the answers we got - for your valuable input.  We are MUCH more confident now that we're not crossing the line with any of the things we are doing to get ready for BMST.
