I finally found a cheap auto dark helmet that's worth buying.  It has a clear lens, not tinted that restricts your visibility, has a replaceable battery & comes with a bunch more, has a headlight for those dark places we get into & it's a whole $37. I just used it this morning & holy crap, what a game changer it is for me! I'm so impressed that's why I'm sharing it with you other fools. 8-)

Thanks Sid!  I had a cheaper one that seems like it dodnt darken fast enough.  The only way I figured it out was a headache, i assumed the smoke and such, and now my eyes are super light sensitive...always.  Keep yourself safe buddy.  I went back to my good helmet.  No more headaches.

I worked with a lot of very good welders that welded almost every day. Many would not use the auto dark hoods. You only get one pair of eyeballs.

Thanks Sid.  Ordered one to replace my other auto helmet.  Still have my old school for bigger projects.

FWIW - Back in the day, Bell Helmets said "If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet".

If you didn't realize the $10 head statement was a sales pitch you didn't know about Snell testing.

It's obvious this is not for a pro welder that lives in his helmet every day but that's not who we are. We are mostly "old-er" hobby welders with eyesight to match & laying a good weld in the right place doesn't come out too good when you can't see the joint. I had got to the point I was marking it with a soapstone line so I had something to follow but when I learned about this clear lens technology I figured I'd give it a go & I am amazed at how much better it is & that's why I shared it.
If you want to be all negative about something you've never tried & keep your head in the sand so to speak, Have at it!

Hey Sid,

I commented as I hurt my eyes with the spare helmet.  I love auto darkening helmets, but hurt myself.  Could be the brand, could be the lack of charge as it is UV rechargeable, or just operator.  But I now use my Jackson helmet, also auto darkening, that I have has since 2002 and bring it in the house so it stays warm - batteries die very quickly in winter.  Just looking out for you at my own expense.

I never received my helmet.  Looking at the tracking,  it made it to Utah but somehow got damaged at that location and returned.
They issued a refund last night.
