Posted today on Facebook from BMST event. You can see the salt, but it's not right past the sign.

That's what it looked like at Speedweek brown dirt at lands end.
Working in the shop I use the 'F' word a lot. No not that word these words Focus and Finish go Fast and Flathead Ford!

I'll agree that the salt is nothing like it was, But too say all you saw was dirt as far as the eye can see, You went to a different location then me this year. All I saw was salt, thin yes, not as bright white as before maybe.

I didn't go to a different location than (not THEN) you 1leg & there was no salt crust visible for at least a mile from lands end. That brown crap you were driving on is brine dirt!

Is brine dirt raceable? How did it hold up from lands end to the salt?

It was crumbling under the traffic but he ECTA guys ran on it this year before SW. Maybe somebody that ran at that meet will chime in.

I think that realistically/pragmatically, racers should expect to be racing on dirt (rather than salt)
at Bonneville.  The existing absolute LSR was set on dirt in 1997 at Black Rock, which shows us
that racing on dirt isn't necessarily impossible.  Perhaps some -- or most -- of the romance of
land speed racing on salt is gone, yes, but people adapt and life goes on.  No, I'm not happy about what I call "the rape of the salt".  But a lot of vehicles already exist, and can run on dirt -- salty or not.  Keeping Bonneville available to be raced on may eventually require a lot of effort and money
from the racing community, in my opinion.

There are other long, flat, smooth dry lake beds in the western United States, as well.  Alvord (in
Oregon) is one of them.  Diamond Valley (in Nevada) is another.

Please try to remember that money talks . . . ever since it was invented.  This is a fact of life.  And
we can't simply cry enough tears to effectively re-salt Bonneville.

By the way, I plan to be there in early September this year to be a spectator at World of Speed.
My Toyota truck is light tan-colored and missing its left front fender . . . and I'll plan to bring some canned beers and sodas to give, free, to other folks -- as a small token of friendship.

The economic downturn would effect turnout of both Joe Public & racers, then you add in the depleted salt conditions we saw last year & the reports of lack of salt previous to SW this year.

I love the USA. How much longer will we be a free nation?

Perhaps we could get some high-ranking government official to become interested in Land Speed Racing.  ....like possibly someone who resides in a white house....

That level of interest / enthusiasm could be enough to bring attention to the dwindling salt resources near Wendover.

We don't need them to be interested in racing, but interested in returning the salt back to the other side of the road.

We had some Utah state people in our pits for a while. They seemed interested in getting the salt back to the other side.

Everyone who is not greedy, go out and buy a Powerball ticket tonight or tomorrow. Odds are 292 million to 1, but at least you have a chance.

Jackpot at this time is 815 million, can buy tickets in 48 states. If you win give the ticket to Save the Salt. They can buy the Intrepid Company in Wendover, or they can donate to the politicians and donate to the BLM. Ticket price is 2 dollars.
