Looking for a little help with interpreting motorcycle class rules.  It seems as though the Altered class rules are a bit vague:4

ALTERED (A)
A: Altered is for specially constructed and purpose built race bikes.
B: Aerodynamic front fairings are not allowed.
C: May use 1 or 2 engines of any design.
D: May use non-motorcycle engines. (PRIOR APPROVAL REQUIRED)

So, if I am reading this correctly, I can run a stock bike that I have made specific for landspeed racing in this class.  My only question would be, what constitutes an aerodynamic front fairing? Is a stock fairing aerodynamic? Do all front fairings need to be removed regardless of design?

Thank you in advance if you know the answer.

Any fairing at all, will move you into the APS class.  Even a small cowl or windshield.  In order to legally set a record, the fairing must follow the rules in APS.  Front fenders are also an area that needs to be looked at.

As for running a "stock" bike in A or APS, I believe you must modify it so that it no longer fits into M or MPS.  Having a seat below the top of the rear tire can do that.

Got it, thank you. I think I sorted my issue with another reading and perhaps moving to a different class.

:friday SuperH, read and reread... be careful to not read things into the rules that are not there.... Read all of section 7, not just the class you think you can beat the record in... Welcome to the helpline... post an intro to let us know what you are doing.... maybe even a build diary, then the community might spot something that will save your bacon.

Understood, here's the scoop:

Last summer I picked up a GSXR1100 and I finally completed the rare combination of bike, time, money, trailer...The bike was a train wreck but with low miles and good bones so I tore it down and while it was not necessarily a good restoration candidate, it was definitely a good LSR candidate.

It is basically a stock 86 GSXR with a jet kit, pods and exhaust. The last dyno run shows it making 110HP and 67 LbFt with a very nice power and torque curve though running somewhat rich.

Based on my reading of the rules I can run the MPS/CG/1350-4 class because it is manufactured in 1986, air cooled, over 1000cc's and has 4 cylinders as well as bodywork and a windshield.

The only other mods are lowered suspension, 17" wheels, single front rotor and header wrap.

I've learned (the hard way) that good communication is sometimes very difficult.

May I respectfully make a suggestion?

Before showing up to race, I suggest that you learn who will be making official
decisions regarding what's allowed, and what requirements are . . . and then
send a LOT of e-mails with photos, specific detailed questions, etc.  -- and get
all the questions "officially" -- or at least kinda "officially" answered before
arriving to race.  Good luck to you.

That was my thought too, but so far as I can tell the LTA guys are pretty relaxed about everything I've asked so far. I'm fairly certain my logic is correct, I was hoping someone with experience at LTA specifically would know if I am reading it correctly or not.

Thanks

I don't know if the Loring rules are different than AMA LSR rules. However, for AMA, Classic means any bike with a production date prior to 1980. If newer, you cannot run in the Classic class. The MPS/CG/1350-4 is "Classic Gas" meaning the engine must be older than 1980. Better confirm your class choice.

Good luck!

"MODIFIED (M)
A: The modified class is for motorcycles BASED on production models.
B: No aerodynamic aids on the front. Commonly referred to as "NAKED".
C: Removal of the front fairings is usually all that is required. (see rules.)
D: Modifications to the other bodywork is limited.
E: Modifications to the engine, swing arm, tank, pegs are allowed."

"MODIFIED PARTIAL STREAMLINER (MPS) Same as Modified(M) with:
A: Aerodynamic aids allowed per rules.
B: Most modern sport bikes with a "chip and can" fall into this class.
C: Custom bodywork is allowed as defined in the rules."

"CLASSIC (C)
Any 4-stroke air cooled motorcycle engine:
A: Manufactured between 1956 and 1986 inclusively"

Seems to fit there. What say ye.

I would say you have it classed correctly by those rules...  Have fun and let us know what happens.  :friday

Looks like I chose well. The event at Loring was a ton of fun for me as a rookie. I set the record for the class at 155.157 in the 1.5 mile, and everything went great aside from the intense head and cross winds. I will be back next year for sure.

More power, more gear, and some better aero should do the trick.

Well done!

Your profile says you reside in Arkansas.  Are you also attending the ECTA events at the Blytheville, Arkansas airport?

Seems like I need to make a change to my profile. I do not live in Arkansas, though I do happen to like Texarkana very much. I wish I did though, I'd be at Blytheville in a hot minute.

The bike is back apart already and the head is on its way for some big valves and porting. Fingers crossed for 175 MPH next year.
