"Extra" cooling for engines

Years ago, I read about a land speed car that -- shortly before a run -- had a fair amount of "ice water" (presumably about 32 degrees F) in its cooling system . . . and after the run, the water was pretty hot.

I'm wondering whether anyone has used coolant substantially colder than that in a land speed vehicle.  I can imagine that some kind of anti-freeze agent, mixed with water, could allow the coolant to be pre-chilled prior to being poured into the engine's cooling system -- at a temperature more like zero degrees F.  Liquid nitrogen
and dry ice are fairly readily available (although certainly not free), and could be used to pre-chill the coolant.

In theory, if the coolant is colder, a lower flow rate might suffice . . . thereby possibly "liberating" a little bit of engine power such that it could be used to accelerate the vehicle instead of pumping liquid through the engine.

A lot of people use ice for the cooling system. Flammable or combustible coolants are not allowed like glycol & alcohol based antifreeze.

Because those systems could leak and contaminate the salt. Water is not a problem.

They are also combustible and a fire hazard. Ask Lynn Goodfellow.

Then again? If the coolant were circulated by an electric pump divorced from the engine???...Zero power loss. 1drink
I`d never advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...But they work for me.

A mechanical/belt driven water pump only takes about 5-7 hp to drive it. I do not recommend electric water pumps for Bonneville cars. Especially if they are making north of 500hp or have a supercharger or turbo.

A belt driven pump gives you 2 things over an electric water pump.
More flow over 2500RPM.
More pump pressure.

We have a 20 gallon water tank. We put about 80-90lbs of ice in it and just enough water to cover the inlet to the pump. Water temp out of engine is about 140 which we are working on to lower. The water also runs to intercoolers. We melt all the ice on a run but a few floating cubes.
