I mean I am able -  I am capable of painting my cage -  but how would the tech gurus look at that?

Like to find out now because it's almost ready to be welded in -  if I am gunna paint -  nows the time to do it!

The tech inspector (theoretically) would like to see a cross section of the tubing and a metallurgical analysis. The welds would all have x-ray inspection. Bring your Finite Element Analysis. Theoretically.

In the real world, the rule book spells out what they would like to have you build so they don't have to scrape you out of the car when it crashes. The tech inspector can't see what tubing you used other than OD. The welds are going to be somewhat obscured by the paint, but that's life. If your welds are crappy, so will the rest of your workmanship. If your car looks suspect, then they will grill you at length about your building techniques. If it's your first tech inspection with a new car, you get the third degree anyway. If you build it in a professional manner, then you aren't going to have problems. Paint it.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

if ya don't paint it, it will take on a really nice red primer look in a day or two...

Actually, I think you'll have to paint and repaint every year.
