The meet you are looking for is the USFRA World of Speed... check the USFRA website for rules for the clubs.  WoS is the only meet on the salt that you can race a street legal car.  Early September...

Cool. I will be out in August, i'll be purchasing a rulebook to figure out some things like what im allowed to do to help with aerodynamycs on this thing. I have full approval from my wife for racecar mods, so the most important step is out of the way.

Is WOS a moving date based on salt conditions or always in September? I dont mind going to watch the first year, much easier on the pocket that way.

Stainless1

August is SpeedWeek, LSR legal vehicles only... get a rulebook, find the class your car fits in, check the safety equipment requirements of the class record, not how fast you can go.
I was just guessing you didn't have all the safety requirements covered, so that's why I suggested USFRA WoS.  Check their website for the dates... as with all the dates don't move with weather.
You might look at ECTA in July, they just announced a 1.5 mile event at the salt.

Some safety equipment is date-rated.  You'll see in the Rule Book.  It's best to buy them later than sooner.  And, like you're going to spectate next year, this could be put off.

My take on driving suits --
Black makes no sense unless you're trying to cook.
Two-piece suits allow you to put the top on in the last few minutes.

. . . and holding an umbrella in your face and whipping it away gets you sorta blind leaving line.

. . . . . and one of my favorites -- moving the push vehicle up to the race car with a series of taps and crashes.  Believe it or not, most race cars can easily rolled back for contact.

This vehicle has no safety equipment yet. Rhodes Cace Cars has a 6 pt cage kit designed for huge GM b bodies, and summit sells fire systems with pull cables. Driveshaft loops are pretty universal. Id like to purchase a seat soon, and being 5'8, the options are endless. Ive already been advised to wait until the events are closer before buying any harnesses, suits, etc. So none of that is purchased.

The drivetrain is more than enough for me to hurt myself with already at my skill level, so ill be focusing on safety equipment. A year should be more than enough to get it together. The only piece i may change is a 2.42 rear end i found for sale.

Edit: I should specify, id like to build for an actual class with more safety rules than 130/150. If anything were to go wrong out there, this brick would not fare well in stock form LOL.

Stainless1

130 and 150 are introductions to salt racing... .150 requires a cage.  You can have as much safety equipment as you want... Come to SpeedWeek to see what its about in August... Then decide if you want to commit the resources to make your brick class legal, if you can find a class it fits.  Put a 4 pt cage in and run the 150 club, just to see where you are...
I don't know anyone that got out of the service with too much money... Just the opinion of a guy thats been at this since 1978, go out in 81

Hi Landspeed racing enthusiasts,
I am registering on these boards for a somewhat atypical reason, since I have very limited motorsport experience. However, like you all, my interest is in going as fast as possible, as I am focussing on breaking a record that may be familiar to some of you: the motorpaced cycling landspeed record. From 166mph in 1995 by fellow dutchman Fred Rompelberg, to 184mph in 2018 by Denise Korenek, my goal is to push this record to 190mph or further.

With past experience in extreme sports and cycling events as well as speed record events in peculiar vehicles such as a human powered submarine and a human powered aerodynamic recumbent I know all about the athletic side of things. For this record I realize I have a lot to learn about the motorized side of the equation muutt.

I?ve come into contact with Tom Burkland who?s been of great help (and who advised me to register here). We have been looking at the dragster that was used for the last record, but it turns out it needs a lot of maintenance to get it riding again and then a bunch of tweaking to make it go fast enough. Therefore we are also looking around for alternative landspeed racing vehicles that would accommodate a custom built fairing, and be fast and stable enough. It is surely a big ask in my first post here, but if anyone has any leads to parties that may be interested in working with me on this that would be greatly appreciated.

And if this project sounds interesting to you in any other way do not hesitate to reach out (my email is info@davidvaneerd.nl ). I am always interested in ideas from all different angles.
For those interested there?s a video and more information about the project on: https://davidvaneerd.nl/en/challenges

Looking forward to learn more :-D.
All the best, David

Hello Everyone,

Long time reader first time poster on the forum.  I went to the salt for the first time in 2021 and got to help with Bob Dauernheim's 608 AA/GL which was an awesome experience that got me hooked and have been back '23 and '24. Also got to go to Loring in 2023 and drive Marcia's F/GL and set a record!  I'm eagerly looking forward to 2025 to help my friends Marcia and Frank with their XO/PP and to see all the friends I've made on the salt and to meet some more.  Hoping for some great conditions this year and big number for everyone while we still have the salt to enjoy!

Hi, David.  Thank you for posting here.  Fundraising will be the big obstacle, because modifying a car capable of
going 190 mph with a suitable fairing on it is a big project, and expensive.  Assuming that some "practice" runs will
happen, gradually increasing the speed of each, the scope of achieving your goal seems to be quite large.  I don't know
anyone with a suitable (much less available) car for this, but I suggest you continue spreading the news -- of your plans --
around, in various venues such as auto clubs, bicycling clubs, etc.  Good luck to you.

Yes you are very right, I've already noticed how hard it is to get funds/sponsoring together for a niche project like this. Getting the bike and gear together is easy, but finding and funding a suitable car is the main obstacle.

Thanks for your encouragement and I will keep pursuing. And if I can I will try to attend the WoS in september this year to get acquainted with the event, in which case I look forward meeting some of the members here!

Howdy! I'm Eric, an avid gearhead. I've been to the salt 2 times, unfortunately, neither time was during an event.

The Fiero never made it off the trailer, but it did go 80 on the salt... U haul probably didn't like me doing that to their trailer. Unfortunately, I don't have pictures from the second trip, and the salt was flooded, it was a different experience, but still quite beautiful.

The Fiero probably won't ever make a pass on the salt, it's just not what I want for that car, however, I am in the very early planning phases of what I hope will be a record crushing monster, I look forward to all I can learn, and teach! I'm quite excited for the adventure ahead.

Welcome to our nightmare Eric.... get a rule book and/or bring the Fiero to World of Speed and give the 130 Club a try... Your adventure awaits.

The Fiero isn't going to be a land speed car, or at least I don't think it will! I picked up a Bonneville rulebook this year, and have been reading and examining it's details! I have some big dreams, and as I do the math, I see they're going to take a ton of careful evaluation to make everything come together like I want. I started a thread in the build diary section for the car, that at present is a bunch of lists, a spreadsheet, and a pile of books! lol

Kustom Kolors

Hello my Name is Clayton Tackett and have done custom paintwork for over 30 years specializing in boats the last 20. I come from a drag racing background but I like anything with horsepower. I've been to Bonneville 5 times as a spectator and recently purchased a 1962 Studebaker that was last ran in 2016 by Ward Edwards 7727 C/G ALT if anyone has any information on the car I would love to hear about it. The plan is to get the rust cleaned up and painted and figure out an engine transmission combination for next year if all goes as planned. We will be at Speed Week Aug 3-7 we usually watch at the 3 mile area. The car was last ran with an LS with a 4 speed top loader but would like to put in a Gen 3 Hemi with a 5 or 6 speed but could use some constructive criticism on that decision.

Stainless1

Clayton, post a pic or 2 of the car... trying to jog my memory... Be sure to pick up a current rulebook while you are there and drop by to say hi.  We are the little red, white and blue Lakester....
