I am building a GT car with a 1990 corvette  ZR1 using  Naca scoop cut into on the front of the hood with a striaght flow to the plentum.    What is the salt risk,  do folks use filters or screeens?  I can't see how it can injest salt  from a clean air flow,  but. as we all know, salt gets everywhere.  I was thinking of putting in a non oiled
K & N or a fine mesh screen.  Thoughts?

Hello Bruno,  I had an air intake on the leading edge of the front bumper.  When we returned from the salt we did the engine rebuild and were surprised to find salt residue on all the top rings.  Subsequently, I made a custom K&N filter, slice and diced standard round filter, did not affect performance following year.

Use a filter! Horsepower is the least of your problems.
Its better to be a has been, than a never was.

We have used a filter for all but the first 2 years with the lakester... K&N dry works good, then you can tap the salt out between runs.  After the first run you will probably be glad you filtered when you get a half shaker of salt...

Small K&N on the 408 Vortec motor in the Camaro cost us 50hp on the Dyno... ( filter was To Small )

The Berkeley never had a Filter and air went straight into it... hmmm

Guess it's a toss up... can you get away with it?  Most likely.. most folks don't run filters out there... however if there's a chance... why take it... just run a BIG filter so you don't choke it...

An air filter is a device which removes solid particulates such as dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria from the air. Air filters are used in applications where air quality is important, notably in building ventilation systems and in engines. That is a nice air filter if it is in the scoop.

Where your air inlet is located I would say it would be almost impossible to get salt in the motor unless it was very windy or (and this is very possible) you have salt kicked up from your tow vehicle when moving the car from the pits or access road.

I would say air filters would be very necessary on an open wheel vehicle where un faired wheels can kick salt all over the place but in your instance, if I were to choose a location least likely to get salt in the intake from actual running I would put it where yours is.

My vote is dont run one....but for sure have a cover or plug when the car is in tow.

ALSO.....

(Something they dont tell you and you just have to learn)

When your vehicle is sitting overnight on the salt you can bet there will be salt in the intake the next morning. This is a real problem if your vehicle is stilling in impound and you wont have much time in the morning to get it out with nut house impound morning is. If the vehicle is in your pits you could very likely have a trailer to help be at least some form of a wind break, but impound has almost nothing around and salt blows everywhere at night.

Take the time and make a nice inlet plug for overnights and impound (air filter or not).

I have had to use a balled up trash bag the last few years......100% ghetto looking....but that how I roll!

We don't run a filter or screen on the 222 camaro and intake is at front of hood. A friend has a flow bench and when we tested the flow drop with even wide screens I said forget this idea.

If you don't run a filter try to get the clutch in and the motor off before you come clear around in a spin. Espicialy if running centrifugals or turbos
