So, not trying to sound sacrilegious but... sounds like you are bringing that motor back from the dead on Easter... We'll all say a "thank you Jesus" when you guys do a 300 at the 3

We didn't get as much done Sunday as we spent a lot of time cleaning the block, several 1/8 pipe plugs and few bigger ones had to be removed to enable brushing and pressure washing the oil galleys.

Then wiping and cleaning sleeves with Miracle Oil.

We also had to remove the timing sprocket from our old crank.

Should get the crank and pistons in next Sunday

It was a bitch getting the old woodruff timing sprocket key out of the old crank and it got buggered up a bit but fixable.

I was at O'Riley's checking on buying a new one. $35 WHAT for this? showed him the old one.

Says let me check parts. Found one, $1.89 :-D

I also need a rear oil seal. Out of stock but will be delivered in 2 hrs.

I had errands to do and seal was there.

  Great company

I remember the old days in racing when people would talk about "cubic inches".

Now it's "cubic dollars".

Rods and pistons installed but we had a big difference between plastic gauge reading [to little clearance] and micrometer reading just right. So, went with micrometer.
Started to degree cam in and discovered new block does not have a raised cam  Standard height gear drive ordered, and I have to order new cam as old cam is ground on raised cam specs.

Standard height gear drive being delivered tomorrow and standard height 8620 Bullet cam [ same specs as old cam but ground on 45 degrees instead of 48] in 2 weeks maybe.

I asked about running the 48 degree cam and Chris said half the cylinders would have correct timing the other half would be off 6 or 8 degrees [not sure if he said 6 or 8] :-P

Anyhow he said other racers have done that and chased their tuning until they figured out the cam was wrong.

The standard height gear drive arrived but it's a 1/4 inch deeper from face to mounting surface than our other gear drives.  So when installing the harmonic balancer, it ran into the face of the gear drive instead of butting up against the cam sprocket!!
Bought some big washers to make up space, of course hole had to be enlarged to fit over crank snout.
After an hour of grinding Troy finished one. One more to go.
Bullet cam arrived sooner than expected

After spending an hour or more enlarging hole in 2nd washer it wasn't needed. Just one gave enough clearance.
So with harmonic balancer installed we found top dead center and were able to index the cam to specs.
installing head next [not finale] to figure out pushrod lengths as push rods for high cam will be too short.

Well, CRAP. after indexing the cam everything checked out but when turning the crank it stopped :?  The rod was hitting the can lobe.

So, we took out the cam looked down the cam bore and rods were sticking up about 1/8 in.

A standard height 426 hemi block is supposed to accept a 4.375 crank stroke [5/8 stroke increase]. Well maybe but not with our top fuel rods.

Today we ground out the sides of the exit wound in the side of our raised cam block, made a
a cardboard template for tracing unto aluminum to weld in.

Off to J&S and Hunter Self in Santa Barbara Monday and hopefully a quick turnaround.
Fingers crossed that sleeves are usuable.

Hunter bore checked the sleeves and found 2 that had a bit too much clearance.

So after a 4 hr. drive home we found three sleeves [I have a bunch] with smaller clearance.

Troy FEDX them yesterday and hopefully Hunter will have the block welded up and the sleeves honed When we come back to Santa Barbara on June 11th.

Geez... block not ready :?  So 250 miles there and 250 miles back. When finished.

Block ready to pick up Friday

 Fingers crossed

We picked up the block yesterday and today we removed the heads, pistons and crank from the
standard cam height block and installed the crank and pistons in our repaired raised cam block.

installing heads, gear drive and pan tomorrow.

When engine blew the drive for the cam was loose [Loctite now]: tongue:  and sheared the pin.

Hunter thought it would be a fast fix, but pin is stubborn. So, waiting on cam.
