SEE YOU ON THE SALT!
Apparently we'll drive 2 miles of dirt from Lands End before we find any! :? :-(
Sid.
If we only have to drive 2 miles to find usable salt that is a blessing... dirt is ok, water, not so much... been there, done that... have the t shirt.... :?

I heard there was mud leaving end of the road. Worried about heavy loads, ruts and traction. We do not need a muddy, slick "Bend in the Road" situation. I hope we get a lot of dryness, no rain!
Good Day Slim and Nancy! RV rented, car and tow rig both at 80% ready and Robyn Munro on the crew this year! Hope to see you there?
So I heard test and tune was canceled . Might wanna spread that news here for us non fakebookers and IG dorks. Nothing on the usfra page.
The next scheduled event is the standing 1.5 mile on July 11-13 to be put on the by the ECTA. This is for street legal vehicles only, and will happen right off Lands End, with staging and pits on the asphalt.

Any locals entering ?
Slim, will there be ports-pottys available at speed week?
I suppose so, but since Bill Lattin and Heather Black fired me two years ago - I don't really give a Subaru. lol8 lol8
I heard they were just handing out Home Depot buckets!
sorry Slim, I didn't know.
End of the road looks encouraging? Pic updated yesterday, 6/19.

We'll find out soon.
Sweet! Be nice to have a qualified person not making SCTA looking like amateurs.
Will the Goodyear truck be there
We took the race truck to the dyno today for what we thought was a final tune and seems we have an ECU that doesn't want to control or stay connected beyond 3000rpm. Tired of fighting with this FiTech system, ordered a Holley Terminator X for the LS. No Speedweek for us, fingers crossed there is a World of Speed this year!

I probably won't even waste my time. Thanks
The guy's at my work asked if it's broadcasting this year.
I used to have it on every year I wasn't able to go. 😫
I guess I'd best let youse guys know that I won't be at SpeedWeek this year. Two reasons:
1: My heart doesn't like the heat any more. I'll stay home rather than feel crappy all week.
2: BLM
I hope to go to WoS, though. See you on the salt.
Hi all, hope everybody has a safe FAST week ! Just wondering if anybody has a 'boots on the ground' report on salt conditions. Pictures don't really tell the story like in person! Good luck, go FAST and stay safe !
I'll be there late today with a for sale sign on The Tank.

I won't be at SpeedWeek this year. I'm planning on attending World of Speed. Two reasons:
1: I can't take the heat these days. My heart gets cranky at me if I spend time in the heat.
2: BLM (and I don't mean the federal agency!).
See you on the salt next month!!
SCTA facebook post shows horrific 120 mph winds at inspection resulting in no inspections until tomorrow.
Guys hanging onto shade poles crap blowing thru. CRAZY.

Good luck to everyone regarding Speed Week. It looks like there won't be any
rain there. Of course, wind is another thing -- and so is salt depletion.
I won't be at Speed Week this year, due to not having found an available room to rent --
before they were all booked. Yes, I'm aware that this happens about a year in advance.
I plan to be at World of Speed this year (my first time) . . . as a spectator.

what's going on at the Speedweek...
I'm watching the livestream from back home in Germany...
for now app. 5 hours...they race now...
minus the time the track was shut down due to issues at the track...they maybe raced 3 hours...
the first racers I saw on course one, that's where the livestream got the camera...
now could make thier second run...after maybe 3 hours racing on the first day of the Speedweek....oops...
I am curious about the total number of entries. Has anyone heard how many entries they have at the event? It seems to be much less than the past.
Stand, official from the SCTA, Friday late evening, 148 racers...

I just got a call from Racergo from the salt the Speed Demon crashed at about 3:00pm MDST and has not bee removed from the car.
So sad...SCTA done a note on FB....
RIP Chris...you was a great friend and you will be missed...but not forgotten
So sorry to hear. Rest in Peace Chris.
May his memory be eternal.
Tragic, my heart goes out to Chris's family and friends
RIP Chris. A great guy with a big heart.

So sad. Was hard to watch the crash. My heart goes out to his family.

PP, have you heard about the salt conditions from SS? I saw they ran on Course 2 today, close to record at 230.
Sabat, last I heard from Stainless was from the first day...as lots of people are asking where I'm...well...back in Germany....
Course condition...I can see it on course 1...a pain....
yeap, the announcer from the livestream said that they came close to the 2011 record....

from looking at the livestream,
the course does look worse compared to the first couple of days.
The cars are definitely kicking up a bigger cloud when heading down track.
So just heard at the end of todays live stream that he will not be streaming the rest of the week, ie the last 3 days.
I hope SCTA did not pay for any of these as he and other have said. Bring back the livestream of the audio. It was so much better because you heard about the other courses.
Watched the live stream off and on today, looked like the staging lanes were empty a fair bit and the cars were really kicking up a lot of salt. Does anyone know what shape the courses are in?
Rough.
has any one heard of a second car that went for a destructive ride--I say one today on a trailer between Ely and Alamo
yesterday, late evening, Danny Thomspon and the Ferguson Team had a small issue on the starting line...
it looks, they had a mishap, as...maybe due to the tough salt surface...the pushtruck kicked him in the last moment off course...
the 1st screenshot shows the the pushtruck...Danny upfront...and to this moment the duo starts to go outside the markers...
the 2nd screenshot shows the turn to left of the pushtruck...the markers are the right side of the course...it shows how far right the pushtruck was...
when Danny pressed the throttle, he was in the wrong direction....
this can happens as it is tough to see where you go with a so racer during the push...when you start so far right...they used the 300+ mph line...
that run was not no 75...they run no 76...changed to A/FS....
Just a shout out for some great runs in your Firebird. If you remember I have the white 79 Firebird that pitted next to you last September. Won't make September this year but hope to make it back next year.
Strange....Dave Kommel framed the Bockscar on Wednesday on the track...but the SCTA Timing didn't show any run of this lakester at all....?????
...and Danny could stay on the right side of the markers...400 qualifier - A/FS - a Nearburg record....Top Speed, so far

I question why it is so hard to get any info on the "incidents" that happen on the salt.
Understandably the Speed Demon was huge news and impossible to keep quiet so news of
their devastating crash spread quickly.
But...
in general, no one talks about the crashes. Why is that?
What is the reasoning behind keeping everyone in the dark about the true dangers of LSR?
Why is it only in this type of racing that crashes don't get reported?
It can't just be that it is bad for business... or can it?
On that.... How many "incidents" occurred this speedweek?
P.S.
We miss listening to Slim Too!

But is anyone really in the dark about the true dangers of LSR? I mean, I assume it's pretty clear to everyone what can happen when someone loses control of a car going 300 or 400 mph. Not trying to be insensitive at all, but having a bad day is just one of the many potential costs of doing business in this sport. If you're willing to take the risk, then the best course of action is to try to make the car as safe as possible and to not dwell on what might go wrong, because as everyone knows...it might go wrong. I just think that beyond trying to be as safe as possible, it's counterproductive and unhelpful to think about crashing if you've already decided that you're going to participate in the sport...
Does anyone know what happened to SuperfastMatt? His Streamliner with the 1000cc engine was doing really well, with a top speed of 261 mph. That was on August 5th, and after that, no more data is in the results.
When the 911 fuel roadster got into the spin a front tire rolled off the wheel once that happened the car dug into the salt and rolled. Donny said this was going to be the last run for the car so it was loaded for bear looking for a 300 MPH run. The plan was to retired the car after the run and i believe put in a museum. There's been a number of wrecks for cars being retired after their final run only to end up crashed during that final run! If it was me I would say I'm parking the ride for a while never going to jinks things saying retiring the car after the run :-) Donny is fine he actually said its going to take more than a little compounding of the paint to clean things up :-D
Well anyway I enjoyed the live broadcast. I only wish they would have considered another day or two.

I agree. Nobody can change the past, but we can learn from it, and -- with a little luck,
perhaps -- make improvements that will make racing safer. I saw a video of Speed Demon in the air, but that video didn't make it clear to me what went wrong (i.e., blown tire?). Then I read on the SCTA results page that Speed Demon "spun out", which
suggests to me that there was too much power applied (to the drive wheels), compared
to the traction that was available to them. No, I don't have an easy solution to this
issue. Speed Demon rolled this way a few years ago, when George Poteet was driving.
An endo (as seen in the video) seems much more brutal than just getting sideways and
rolling/tumbling. I'd like to know more about what made the car flip so high. What part
of it (apparently) "dug into" the ground? Could a design change help prevent this when
a car does get sideways? No, I don't like watching vehicular crashes. But there may be
something useful to be learned from this, if there are other videos of it.

There is a lot of misinformation about the Speed Demon 3 liner that is confusing people & it should really be called the Maro Demon. The body & most of the chassis was not Poteet Speed Demon, it was the Maro Special that was built by Tom Hanna for Bobby Moore. The first time Bobby went 300 it made a snap right turn & spun. At that time we still had hard salt crust so it didn't dig in. That was the last time it ran until Jim Knapp bought it but I don't think he ever got it into it's bad aero speed zone. With new front & rear chassis clips to make it RWD with ex-Speed Demon components it was then called SD3 but the Maro body was unchanged. As the 4WD Maro when it came unglued, the rear did not come around, the front aero snap turned it right.
Large vertical sail panel on the front of a liner is something I've had to deal with before. The Herbert Steen 4 engine liner was a vertical wedge design (Target 550 is the same) & at about 300 it also made a right turn & threatened to go through the timing tower. My fix for what was a design built previous to me coming on board was to lower the top & raise the bottom to reduce the pressure buildup & give it somewhere to cross over under the car. It later went 380 & never had that problem again. Betsy had a vertical nose but with a round bottom it could bleed off the difference.
I've learned a lot working with liners over the years & if you look at the nose on mine, it has a duck bill look to it for this reason. Most of the air goes over the top with the bottom going into the front tunnel & diffuser but with very little going down the side to sail panel area. It's also a round bottom design where I'm attempting to manage the air with tunnels. I'm not an aerodynamicist but I have been describer as a person who can see the air & have helped a lot of other cars go fast.
Sid.
While i realize how sensitive it is to talk about bad accidents, as someone building a car in a class with a 302mph record, the more information we have about safety the better. The video I've seen of the SD3 accident the car would have been at the rear 3/4 perspective when things went wrong. An incredible amount of dust was kicked up before you see the car in the spin, which makes me wonder if the front dug in causing the violent spin. Hopefully someone with a better perspective will find a way to inform builders to improve safety.

Jim Knapp did make a pass at 309.438 mph in March 2019 (Top Time at DLRA Speed Week).
Many of us witnessed the front tire with spindle and a section of the front axle attached from the SD3 came into the pits at a high rate of speed. Thankfully no one was hit only damage was a dent in the side of an early sixty's Ford pickup which finally stopped the traveling tire.
Hearing the screams watch the tire no doubt helped keep many from getting hit. Seeing this certainly gives me pause about how dangerous what we do can be. Hopefully something can be learned about the cause and possibly help a future build be a bit safer.

The new changes appear to be a non driven front suspension and power train. Granted, those changes appear to have been made by the Maxwell team responsible for SD2, which made more 400mph+ passes than any other land speed vehicle ever. My armchair quarterback take is similar to Kiwi's, that the slanted front would generate more front downforce and pressure than SD2. That may have been a wise design choice for an AWD drivetrain, but it is hard to understand if the trade off for front grip would be worth it RWD. Again, hopefully someone with more specific knowledge of the car and not wildly speculating will chime in, if not here on YouTube or somewhere. It's a tragedy that this accident happened and I hope others can be prevented.
Knowledge should be shared from spins & crashes to make this sport safer & not just covered up, even when it involves a fatality.
Sid.
Front wheel drive cars don't spin .
Ask Brian Gillespie if FWD cars can spin.
If a FWD car had one front tire fail, I don't think it would spin, it would dig into the salt and violently flip over. When I spun my FWD lakester it was on it's way over till both parachutes hit and snapped it straight. I've always thought i was just a fraction of a second from doing a number of high speed rolls
I see that Jay Meagher/Valley Fever made a return run at over 375 mph for a 361 record on the last day of SW. Previous record holder was the original Speed Demon from way back in 2008!

Not sure if they make a one peice suit but I bought a pair of Redkap white paints that worked well. I usually wear shorts and light colored t shirts and use the pants a few days in.
Plenty of one-piece white suits in the market. Try looking for industrial "Painter Suits".
I find ronnieroadster's comments about seeing part of the front axle of the Speed Demon III fly into the pits very interesting. Also special thanks to Sid for explaining the heritage of the SD III as it was mutated from the original Ton Hanna build for Bobby Moore.

On his YouTube channel he says that he had the wrong gearing for the speed he wanted. And his motor was "iffy" going into SpeedWeek. And he was hoping the oil draining out of the body after his last run was just an oil hose that came loose.
The rear 5ft of the Maro Demon chassis was in the dumpster & appeared to have been torn off by impact. After a snap right turn it was going backwards when it came out of the salt cloud & then went airborne but appeared to still be complete until impact.
Sid.
Good morning Pork. Your point is well taken. I have another point which i wont post on here, but hopefully we get to hear the exact cause and not a cover up. If there was an error, it should be shared so this does not happen to another car or builder. As for other post that suggest it went into a spin prior,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i not sure of that. You would think it would have rolled like George did a few years ago. I have never seen a streamliner go into a spin, and not saying it didn't happen but......................Did the nose dig in as posted? Possibly, but let's wait for the investigation to come out to make up our own minds. That is,,,,if it comes out. And as for that front wheel going in to the pits? I have that picture also and that dented door on that ford truck. Lucky it did no human damage.
If the whole wheel and tire with spindle and part of the axle ended up in the pits, that would point to the axle failing and not the suspension it seems.
I hope that some accurate and useful information will eventually be available that tells what
caused the crash.
I think that the technology exists that could provide traction control capable of keeping a
streamliner from getting dangerously sideways due to wheelspin. I also hope that a system like that is not prohibited per the rules of the SCTA.
I don't mean to appear like I'm in "wringing hands" mode, or "crying over spilled milk". Learning
from what happened could be useful and help improve safety in the future.
Could careful design largely eliminate the possibility of something "sharp" (instead of blunt/smooth)
digging into the ground and causing a longitudinal flip (called an "endo")? I'm not necessarily
assuming that part of the SD's front section did, in fact, dig into the ground. I suppose that at
a speed of almost 300 mph, if something lifted the front end just several feet from the ground, then
air pressure could flip the car in similar fashion as it has (helped, of course, by torque from the
drive train) flipped dragsters.
Years ago, I was on board an aircraft carrier, watching a film that showed various aircraft launching
from the carrier . . . and others landing on it. These events were filmed in order to learn from the
mishaps. Perhaps more videos taken of every run at Bonneville could prove useful in a similar way.
By now we all know that safety rules are written in blood.

Short course 8/3/25 Speed demon, 283 quarter 243 mile 1 249 mile 2 spin
Only Speed Demon team knows from data download but looks like car was losing traction, backed off, and gave more throttle lost traction and spun?
Didn't the original Speed Demon have traction control?

Is this the final run? Other reports have said Speed Demon 3 crashed on the long course.
[But there are no '715' runs reported in the long course results for that day.]
I would assume that all versions of speed demon had traction control. We were next to them in impound years ago and I was talking with one of them about the tires and how shredded they were. He said yeah and that's at such and such percentage of wheel spin based on the traction control settings. They run Motec or did I believe so TC is pretty standard if you want it.
I will also point out that those pics of the suspension are during fabrication so there could have been more added.

It would be interesting to see a video of the way the front suspension actually worked after it was finished. I wonder how much total travel the axle actually had, maybe 1" total? Armchair inspector questions.

It looks pretty simple to me, just a lower arm and an upper rocker that functions as the upper arm. Both sides look to be fixed together so they do not travel independently. Both sides use both coilovers. I think you're right on travel though, guessing on the rocker arm ratio it seems to be 1-2" of suspension travel.
I would expect a limiter/bump stop that would prevent it from burying the nose at speed or if a spring broke. Maybe that wasn't fabricated yet in those pics.

Pork Pie lets read the numbers right. At Bonneville you have 2 miles to build speed now a car is entering the 3rd mile but the 1st mile timed, the [3rd mile from start] 2nd mile timed, [4th mile from start] 3rd mile timed] 5th mile from start.
Go to SCTA/BNI Speed Week Results Aug. 3rd Short course bottom of pg. and get the numbers right.
SPEED DEMON TEAM QUARTER 1ST MILE 2ND MILE
283.875 243.450 249.640 SPIN
There is only 2 timed miles on the short course no 3rd mile.
JL222
When I first saw the SD3 make the immediate snap sideways I figured something in the front suspension broke. After it was in the salt cloud it was off the ground and the front tire was still attached, but barely. When it hit the ground with huge force the now detached tire and suspension assembly rebounded with enough force to make the pits a 1/4 mile away. It would have been a horror for the the crew and family to see. Lee Kennedy has to be traumatized for life to see a friend and fellow racer die before his eyes. I feel so sorry for everyone concerned.

249.640 was the fastest mile.
Now I don't understand what is going on.
JAL AKA JL222 says PorkPie read the numbers right and then quotes from the official results page. Apart from the unfortunate typo adding 100mph to the Mile 2/2nd Mile speed, what is the problem?
Thomas: who do you think needs to do you a favour?
Just in case there is confusion about the results page we are looking at ...
Pork Pie mile 3 is the first timed mile. 2 miles to build speed then entering 3rd mile so 21/4 is 21/4 time of third mile
with 3/4 mile to go to 4th mile 2nd timed mile.

NO. Short course starts at the Zero and ends at the Three.
The long and short course both start timing at the 1mile. When you look at the timing slip the first mile time is from the 1 to the 2.On the long course you can get 4 timed miles 1/4 time and terminal speed. On the short course you get 2 timed miles.

This was the third (and fatal) run for the SD 3...he run on course 1...which is actually the long course...
mostly...when they racer went only three miles...albeit the racer could run five miles...the run shows up on the short course timing list...
hope this explains....
The SCTA screwed up and posted the run on the short course results, when in fact the run in question was run on the long course.
So John you are going by information that was posted wrong by the SCTA/BNI. Pork Pie is only trying to correct what the SCTA got wrong. I hope this explains the misinformation that has transpired.
Also the short course is only 3 miles long, 1 mile to gain speed, first timing trap to time entire second mile, next timing trap timing the first quarter mile of the third mile, 2 1/4 mile, third timing trap timing entire mile 3. That is what the rule book says.

Pork Pie, your right short course is 3 miles long [Live and learn] :-P
Also it gets confusing when 2 mile times from start are listed on timing tags [not counted] and then after
entering the third mile shows tines for 1st 2nd 3miles + exit speed.
I think BNI may have posted runs made by a few teams on course 2 on the short course results as I don't think it would make sense for teams trying to set a high speed record on a short course.
And their listed times after a 1 mile build up would be outstanding.

Examining the front suspension photo (which was, I believe, in reply 105, before it disappeared) showed an arrangement that, if this is what was actually run, would offer a very spongy lateral stiffness. This could easily result in a front end that, at speed, would be laterally unstable and prone wobble back and forth and not follow steering input with any clear fidelity. A "spooky" steering response would be unsettling for the driver and may be why that run never went beyond the 240 mph region.

Hi George,
You were running your Firebird weren't you? And I think I read the firebird spun on one of its runs, which could happen to anyone racing at Speedweek. So what is your personal take on the condition of the salt at Speedweek this year? Bumpy, potholes, slushy, great, bad, etc. ?
I was not there and you are a salt veteran, so I appreciate your opinion.
On the turnout being small, that could be many factors, but I would guess Money might be the number 1 answer, as everything is rocketing in price, just my opinion. Maybe racers are going to race other events as the hotel rooms etc. are less expensive to save money.
Tom G.
Yeah, we are interring the USFRA Sep meet. Cooler weather and hotel rooms way cheaper.
But the main reason. We couldn't get reservations for Speed Week hotels all full?
Doesn't add up with such a small turnout.
More spectators? I wasn't there and didn't see any videos of spectators on live feed.
JL222
Hi Tom, ya, I spun and did some damage. Car caught air and came off the ground. Luckily I didn't over build the spoiler, as it collapsed and the car settled but tilted. It's all repairable though.
I think that the fact the starter told you on every run to stay all the way left or right and away from the middle of the track was a good indicator of track condition. They changed the course 4 times in the 6 days I was there. One day they weren't finished till noon. Salt was hard and dry didn't start till a couple of miles after the end of the access road. First time I've had a feeling that the end might be near.
.
I only raced on course 3, When I was up for my A license pass the starter told me he didn't think the course might not take 200 and to be careful, I avg 216 in the 2 1/4, so likley had a exit speed around 234. Never once did I feel the car want to get loose once I was past the 1 mile mark. The 832 weighs around 5000lbs and has front and rear suspension. It was my 4th pass ever lakes racing at Bonneville or El mirage.
Rumer I heard was some where worried about the salt not being safe to race on. I have not driven enough to feel qualifed to answer that. But the guys i'm with would not have let me race if they thought it was unsafe. I did drive course 3 Friday afternoon with Russ and he told me what I should be looking for and how to drive the car.
Nobody asked but here is my 2 cents, i have been racing on the salt since 2003, of course its nothing like it was then but i will say, this year was not bad. SCTA did a great job making new courses. We made 4 runs, 2 on Wednesday and 2 on Thursday, all before noon on course #1.
We also run a roadster, i felt the course was very drive-able. As far as being rough, it was very gritty, hence the tire damage but pretty smooth. I did notice that the salt is not as bright white as in the past and i feel the end is coming sooner than
later. We are going back to WOS and not sure what they are going to have to work with between SW and the bike guys this week. There is only so much crust left. And i will be honest, if we can only get a few runs out of a pair of $1600 tires then this may not
be for us due to our budget moving forward.
George, and everyone else that replied, Thanks for the information.
Did any of you talk to anyone who used the center of the track? Were the starters maybe keeping that for 300 mph cars?
The few cars I could hear on the video that had a lot of HP, seemed to be hunting for traction by the RPM variations, Got Salt Lakester comes to mind.
Thanks for the replies, sorry to hear the salt crust is that fragile, and abrasive. The next 3 meets will be interesting to see how they turn out.
Tom G.
Being in a roadster, we use all the course😂 made no difference, and tariffs have nothing to do with the turn out🤦♂️
Each year when we arrive at Bonneville we have a tradition drive to lands end and look out to see where the courses are set up. Seeing the Zero marker is always uplifting however this year at land's end there was no salt to be seen there was nothing but dirt as far a the eyes could see that was certainly upsetting. What's left is definitely nothing like it was even in 2009 and then into the next decade! I have a Save The Salt bumper sticker in my garage I purchased when I attended as a tourist my first speed week back in the 80's . Is the end near possibly?

It was crumbling under the traffic but he ECTA guys ran on it this year before SW. Maybe somebody that ran at that meet will chime in.

I think that realistically/pragmatically, racers should expect to be racing on dirt (rather than salt)
at Bonneville. The existing absolute LSR was set on dirt in 1997 at Black Rock, which shows us
that racing on dirt isn't necessarily impossible. Perhaps some -- or most -- of the romance of
land speed racing on salt is gone, yes, but people adapt and life goes on. No, I'm not happy about what I call "the rape of the salt". But a lot of vehicles already exist, and can run on dirt -- salty or not. Keeping Bonneville available to be raced on may eventually require a lot of effort and money
from the racing community, in my opinion.
There are other long, flat, smooth dry lake beds in the western United States, as well. Alvord (in
Oregon) is one of them. Diamond Valley (in Nevada) is another.
Please try to remember that money talks . . . ever since it was invented. This is a fact of life. And
we can't simply cry enough tears to effectively re-salt Bonneville.
By the way, I plan to be there in early September this year to be a spectator at World of Speed.
My Toyota truck is light tan-colored and missing its left front fender . . . and I'll plan to bring some canned beers and sodas to give, free, to other folks -- as a small token of friendship.
I wonder why the car count is down!
The economic downturn would effect turnout of both Joe Public & racers, then you add in the depleted salt conditions we saw last year & the reports of lack of salt previous to SW this year.
Sid.

We don't need them to be interested in racing, but interested in returning the salt back to the other side of the road.
We had some Utah state people in our pits for a while. They seemed interested in getting the salt back to the other side.
