I enjoyed the show a whole lot.

<snip>

And it was ALL BONNEVILLE !

With all due respect Scott, it wasn't ALL Bonneville.  The scene with the blood on the cage tubes was a still photo taken after a crash at El Mirage.  The "previous owner" of the blood told me that himself.  AND it was 8 years ago, in 2000.  Even in most news or sports programs there's usually a disclaimer when stock footage or photos are being used.  This display of literal blood and gore was presented (again, only in my opinion) very deceptively.  Just as the footage that was intended to show Leslie's crash when in fact, it was Jason's; the "twin turbo" issue and a whole lot of image flipping was done.

Yes, I know it's intended to be "entertainment" but that concept seems to have been stretched to the breaking point.

I've done some introspection about this and I've come to the conclusion that the reason it bothers me is that I (along with other photographers) have been held to a standard intended to minimize negative publicity as well as insurance costs for the sanctioning bodies.  I don't have a problem with that.  I don't go out on the salt to see crashes.  I don't have any intention of finding fame and fortune by selling photographs of blood and gore.  However, what I DO have a problem with is what appears to be a double standard.

I haven't heard from any of the SCTA or USFRA reps in official capacity so far.  I believe that neither of those two sanctioning bodies was mentioned by name.  I really don't know what the "official" stance is on this issue, but I'd like to.

I think this is gonna be my last post on the subject.  I'm going back to the process of giving my website a facelift. Maybe I should try that on my own face.  Hmmm...do-it-yourself facelift.  I wonder....

I'm just a little curious, did Jason sign a release form with Discovery Channel, so they could use that footage of his crash?  Seems there's a lot of misrepresentation going on...could be a nasty can of worms!    :?

QuoteIf you have ever met George Poteet or Wayne Jesel or any of these guys you will quickly feel like they are one of us common racers out there. In fact, I had the spare Blowfish transmission in my car at the end of the week and I don't even know these guys.

I have never met George Poteet and I'm sure you are correct in your statement, but when I went hunting for a welder to use those Blowfish guys weren't very friendly to me.  They were packing up and disappointed I guess, but just not all that friendly.

Troy, you ever need a welder look for the trailer with the flaming nut (this goes for anyone). I bring a nice MIG with gas setup.
I also will have a plasma cutter, compressor and generator to run them.

As far as Poteet goes.....
Never met the guy but I am someone who makes a real effort to talk to anyone that wants to talk....even if I am busy....but even I can recall times I have had to cut conversations short due to circumstances.

I wasnt there and you may be correct that they were not cool to you but they also just may of been having a bad day.

~JH

It could very well be those exact circumstances, that is why I included that they may of had a bad day.  No worries on my side, just won't go see them for any help next time.   :-D

The response you received from them could have been because this ( http://www.radrides.com/home.php  (see driveshaft)) may have just happened.

I guess they don't have any experience with Bonneville disappointment.  We've been doing this a long time so I guess we are used to it, but it never kept us from being polite and friendly. :-D

The show cast a favorable light on land speed racing. There were certainly some inaccurate statements but it was a positive piece overall. They were obviously in love with Leslie but it is theater.

Sum,

Without viewing the show a third time they showed Keith Copeland's crash at least three times then put in a shot of a different car from 8 years prior insinuating that it was Gail Phillips' streamliner. No mention of Keith, Cliff or others. The OSU team was shown to be "banned" from the pits, made to set up "miles" away from everyone else. The clip clearly showed that they were well within the tape line on a pit area that measured 1mi. x 1/4mi. Hardly "miles" away.

Louise was an associate producer. I thought her involvement would have corrected massive errors in the final product. Someone with knowledge of LSR should be consulted before the show is aired.

I don't know how these things are handled by the BNI board but, I certainatly intend to find out next year.

I am currently watching the Steve McQueen movie "Le Mans" on TMC, so much better!

In THAT part of the post, I was talking about
The World's Fastest Motorcycle, the 2-hour 2006 show.

NOT last night's show.

My fault for putting more than one
subject in a post........

Ok.  I gotcha.  Besides, DW pretty clearly stated what I was griping about.

NOW it's the last one.  (Sure)

ARGHH!!!  Me too Dean!

Anyone know if we can buy it.

Or if someone recorded it and can run me a copy I would glady pay them for it.

Thanks in advance,

Bump.

I would still love to get my hands on a copy if anyone has one or can point me where to buy one.

Thanks again.

Maybe y'all should switch to chain drive....

I still enjoyed the show, would watch it again.  I have never seen an accurate depiction of LSR, but that does not stop me from getting excited when I see a program about the hobby that I am obsessed with.  It gives me the chance to discuss LSR with the non-addicted to explain it is not really like that...  WFI was not accurate, it was still enjoyable, I watch it at least once a month, just for the salt scenes...
I hope they make another one, the more often they do it the better they will get, I hope someone will start doing shows of all the events, I like seeing the salt on TV.  :-D

I agree about Salt on TV. We all like to see the sport shown so we can get the uninitiated interested. I remember watching stupid shows like "Kookie" starring "Ed Byrnes" just to get a glimpse of a hotrod  more years back than many on this forum have been around. Also "The Munsters". These shows got guys like Ed Roth and Geo Barris and TV Tommy going. Let's not chase these people away when they are giving us free air time. Let's give them the benefit of our experiences and the guidence of past mistakes. Maybe even a ride in the USFRA "Driver Education Mobile" when it's finished. They can be a real asset to the sport, or we can turn them against us. The choice is ours. Just some thoughts from a Newbie.

Ray,
You, like other photographers, signed a release with the provision that you are in compliance with BLM permit requirements and would go only where photographers are allowed.  That is, generally the area behind where the safety people are located and roughly 1,000 feet from the course.  If you check things out the Top Gear folks obeyed this restriction with the exception of their helicopter which did stay away from the cars at high speed.  The Day-Glow hat is our way of checking on photographers who are allowed special access.  There are some who have abused this agreement and I have banned them from those restricted areas in subsequent years.  I'm sure you have heard their complaints but they brought it on themselves.  The two Discovery Channel teams who shot at World of Speed were great about staying away from prohibited areas but you can't police them 24/7.  I think they worked well with us to comply with our requests.  I'll know more when I see the rest of the programs.  The thing we can't control is post location insertions by the producers.

I've had several emails with suggestions and I intend to make some of their suggestions a part of the photographers requirements next year.  Mostly concerned with accuracy of credits and mention of Save the Salt in their productions.

We have never charged for event access hoping for good publicity for WoS.  We did charge for special course access to cover safety personnel and other expenses which they were happy to pay.  We have offered extra day access for racing/filming when asked but NEVER have we been taken up on it when film companies find out what it costs us to put on the extra day.

I'm just a little curious, did Jason sign a release form with Discovery Channel,
so they could use that footage of his crash?

Lynda

I believe that particular footage was actually shot by Ray Crowell.

I wonder if ANYBODY has gotten HIS permission.....

I wonder how they got the clip and who they asked for permission to use it? Presumably they needed someones permission didn't they? Todd is hosting the video clip on youtube at Jason's request but I can assure you we've told everyone it's not ours to give away, we're just hosting as requested. Surely they can't just take it off of you tube? Even when we had professional assistance retrieving the video they all acknowledged that they would not keep or use the video since none of us retrieving actually owned it. If there was any misconduct there I'd surely like to know!

I haven't really commented on the show but I'm very disappointed in the use of Jason's crash video to depict another racers crash. Each of our triumphs and trials are our own and I find it insulting and in bad taste to misrepresent the truth in that manor. Especially when he was back out racing on the salt 2 weeks later. There's a story, why wasn't that told? That clip has circulated as the fastest recorded open wheel bike wreck. I'm not positive if that's factual but if they were going to put that much effort into showing crashes then why didn't we get to hear Jason's story?

I wonder if Jason did give permission but didn't know it would be depicted as another's wreck and not be given rightful credit. (Maybe he didn't want that kind of publicity, I dunno). I will definitely consider this the next time I give permission to use our own footage!

I too like watching any land racing on TV but it remains disappointing to me when the facts are wrong. Putting your own spin on a story is one thing but a fact is a fact and it's not that hard to check. Heck one quick post on here will clear things up! I mean we all know everything on here don't we?

The thing that bothered me the most, beyond the repetitive crash fest, was hearing Glen's voice over & over again.... we have a rider down.... I love you Glen but really that was too much! It really started to bother me. Maybe it's because we were behind him on the starting line, maybe it's because he's a team mate & we know him, maybe it's because of the losses we've had this year but it really gave me a bad feeling. I like watching LSR and getting that euphoric feeling that takes you back in your mind to the magical salt land, watching a run & feeling your blood pressure rise & Adrenalin pump but this show left me with the focus on the point zero something percent of loss that we rarely see. I'm sorry but I just didn't like that. We all know the risk, we've all shed the tears, did we really need it jammed down our throat? Oh well, I guess that's why I like comedies and not horror movies. When I sit down to watch TV or a movie I just want to walk away happy!
