Don,

Actually I saw Noonan's back and neck in a couple of shots helping Leslie. Recognized the shirt.

Interesting show. I hope they do more but get the facts right.

It would be great for them to build a car and film the whole effort.

OK I'll put my two cents worth in. I agree that it it could have been better, more accurate, etc, etc. But all in all it was nice to see the salt, see familiar cars, bikes, and people. Being a bike guy I would have liked to have seen more motorcycles. As far as picking Leslie, well a woman going fast is, seemingly, more apealing to the masses than a guy. And of course Leslie is lots easier to look at than JN and Jason .

I will admit that I knew nothing about Leslie before the show and originally I was disappointed because I thought that they were highlighting her because shes a pretty blond. I felt this way because in truth LSR has a very heavily male dominated demographic and there are other people who have a much longer history involved with LSR who don't get any press at all.

In life I have seen many guys never get back on a bike after having a spill.
Good for her that she can fall that hard, know the risks and pain and still get back on and do it again.
Clearly she is not involved with LSR for just the face shots.

Not if you see Ray's photo   :-o...........  I wish they would have put a in-car camera in Poteet's ride looking down the track..  I was dissapointed that they didn't show a complete run of anyone.  With the copter, it could have been neat.............

I also enjoyed the show. I saw our car as well for about .5 seconds, but hey that's better than nothing.

It also bugged me that they didn't mention the other cars that have gone 300 MPH before the Blowfish, especially since I had helped with one of those cars. Oh well though, I guess you can't expect everything to be perfect. I'm very glad that they are showing our sport on TV, and I hope they continue to keep filming.  :-D

In the late 80's and most of the 90's there was a great race to be the first doorslammer over 300mph.  Of course most of know how that was(Kugal/Lefevers), but many cars at one time were in the hunt.  Egars, Kugal/Lefevers, Cook, McDonald and Pitts, Leggit, Gale Banks (who we got many ideas for our car), us and probably others that were trying very hard.  Now the new number is 333 for the fuel guys and 310 for the rest(although we want that 333.1 also).  Next year will our 20th year with the car and who knows maybe then.  We came close in 94, and if the inner-cooler didn't burst this year there was a good possibility.  Bonneville is a strange place where she slaps you in the face and you go home disapointed, but ready for nex year.  That is what Bonneville is for many of us, our dream to go faster than the competitor.  This is what keeps us comming back, the dream of next year.  Maybe we can do it in 09.

When Leggit put up that 333 number, it amazed the heck out of me. Made me realize how fast a stock bodied car could go. It would be really awesome for a door slammer to put up a number like that again. I wish you the best of luck in '09.

What part of the show gave you the idea that the "special meet" was included?

DW

This isn't from the show, but it might help:  There was a video crew from the east coast that shot tons of stuff at the Shootout.  I got to know 'em a little bit.  But they're a private outfit, hired by Mike Cook if my sleazy old memory still serves me.  They got kinda "in the way" a bunch (I guess people think that of me and my camera, too, so I shouldn't throw stones) but I think the most interesting part of it was when the lead guy (a Brit) taped a small video camera to the fin on the Speed Demon.  It starts here:
http://www.chevyasylum.com/bsf2008/shootout/demon/part4/080925_0402r8_jpg.html and you can see Ron Main talking to the Brit and then he takes the camera off.  I didn't overhear what they were saying, but it seemed pretty obvious to me.

So I don't know where or when video from the Shootout (or WoS, for that matter) will be shown or made available.  That crew asked me if I'd take some photos of them doin their thing...and every time I caught up with 'em to transfer the images to whatever they had, they were too busy to be bothered with it.  So they never got 'em.

I spose I could create a section on the Shootout pages, but it'd probably be kinda boring.

Great photos Ray

Brian Leckey was at the Shootout with a crew of 7 and a helicopter and editing it now for a 1 hour program to run on a major cable network.

Brian is a land speed veteran film maker one of his first assignments was filming Rosco McGlashan when working for the BBC in the early 90's.  He has filmed a number of other land speed attempts along with his work for a lot of other cable and broadcast channels.

I would expect that it will be a very high quality program.  They were trilled with the footage they got about 100 hours worth.   Brian shot most of the footage that was used in the National Geographic show Need For Speed Bikes.

He has a quick edit of some of the footage on You Tube. The program will cover both bikes and cars.

Well, I watched the show last night and again this morning and I thought it was great. You have to understand that there are a lot of non-racers that watch this and they want to hear the big names, or see a real cute blond setting a record on a bike. I was just elated to see the 1034 "Sam Sampson" coupe depicted with the big guns of racing. I am part of that team too. It's all good for all of us. If you have ever met George Poteet or Wayne Jesel or any of these guys you will quickly feel like they are one of us common racers out there. In fact, I had the spare Blowfish transmission in my car at the end of the week and I don't even know these guys. It helps to know Wayne Jesel though. Ha Ha. I for one appreciated the coverage.

Thanks for the link to the video.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching it...almost as much as I enjoyed covering you and your team's effort at the Shootout.  :)

I got chills again when I heard "Fastest run on a motorcycle" just like I did when I heard it the first time.

There was a big difference between the two shows from a presentation point of view.  At least in my eyes.  There was very little bling to Brian's clip.  It told the story clearly without the repeats and 5-second clip switches.  I look forward to seeing that production in its entirety.

I dunno if you've seen this, Ack, but here's what I did on your effort at the shootout:

And here's a shot of a pretty happy guy:

I have never met George Poteet and I'm sure you are correct in your statement, but when I went hunting for a welder to use those Blowfish guys weren't very friendly to me.  They were packing up and disappointed I guess, but just not all that friendly. :?

RayTheRat

I had the pleasure of meeting George for the first time this year.  He came across to me as a soft-spoken, well-mannered racer.  Nothing more, nothing less.  I was really amazed at how he sat patiently for 3 days (9/22-9/25) while Ron Main's team rebuilt the Speed Demon from a the fire with the turbo motor.  I guess they call those things Hellfires for a reason.  :)

Both George and his sister who was there with the team treated me very nicely.  "Just folks."  I can think of some teams in the past who haven't been nearly as friendly.  I'm gonna shut my mouth now before I get myself in more trouble.

I'm no racer - just a diehard fan since childhood, and I can tell you one thing about one hour TV shows - They don't have to be repetitive to be coherent.

Anyone here remember the great PBS story of Art Arfons on "Point of View" - "The Green Monster"? It was an hour show (no commercials) that didn't think the viewers were stupid, and yet showed LSR and some of its characters (not just Art) with respect - telling their story clearly and informing the viewer as it went. It was factual, not hyper-dramatic with crash footage, and most of all - it was watchable, not boring at all.

It beats Discovery's latest salt show all to hell IMO.
"The Green Monster" is a keeper, I'll end up re-recording over "Speed Capital of the World".

Nice coverage. The Blowfish guys need to know a stock body doorslammer without a chopped top has been, I believe, 330 a few years back. Fun to watch................JD

I wonder if they know how much more HP they will add to reach 300 or 310?

Yes, we do.
