Deb.
Just so you know the rider down was added to the streamliner crash at the 4 mile by Discovery. If you watch the tape when Gail Phillips crashed in the Doug Odom streamliner my words were" we have a crash at the 4 mile". the rest of what I said was not used. I have no control over what they dub into their tape. However the guy running the film crew was rude to me and a couple of others in the timing trailer and we asked them to leave. I was not pleased with most of the one hour tape. It made us all look foolish.

No part did they tell what it takes to make speed week happen and Darn little about the history.
Remarks like some going home in a body bag just plane sucked. I could go on, but whats done is done.

This is just my opinion it was just entertainment. Most of it was in left field, some of it was not in the park at all.
I did enjoy it,the air time for our sport was great. The flaws did hurt the show, but it still beat the crap out of nascar.
And we all know about opinions :-D

Hey Deb, when you put it on utube I think it probably becomes public domain, I'm sure I didn't read the fine print before saying I agree when I put a video on there.
Don't worry Glen, we know you don't say rider down at all the spins and crashes, they did wear that out.
Show of hands, how many of you play WFI more than 6 times a year...

Yeah, in NASCAR they just turn left.  LSR, you can turn either way depending on what kind of day you're having.

Not sure how that would work.  I'm not one for reading contracts or instructions (Lordy how I've paid for that flaw) but on some of the racetrack sheets I've signed it had some gobblety-gook about media permissions waived.

Here's another angle that I have not seen mentioned yet. Want to bet that there is going to be yet another huge jump in entries for next year's Speed Week as a result of the show? Just like the jump we saw when "Indian" came out?

This year I was waiting in the bike inspection line and could not believe the number of entries where the riders had no idea of the rules. No rule book, they just thought if they showed up they could run. I lost count of the number of holes I had to drill for guys who did not even know their axles had to be safety wired.

Anyone care to speculate if the entries will:

A) Decrease because of the bad economy or
B) Increase because of the increased publicity.

From my experience at Land's End (hey! I actually have experience in something!) The spectator numbers will explode!  My crew and I have seen the increases every year, expecially after "World's Fastest Indian" was released.  As many of you can attest, the lines were HUGE!! this year at Speedweek.  What amazes me, is that the increase was world wide, not just nationally!  The first question they ask is: "How close can we get and will be able to see them racing?"  The second is, "Can we go through the Pit Area?"  I have NEVER, let me repeat that....NEVER been asked if they will be able to see the wrecks!!
So, yes, even with the economy, there will be more Racers and more Spectators!  The interest is all ready there, so any publicity, good, bad, or completely off-the-wall, will peak that interest and Speedweek will only get bigger.

Stolen, I think is the word.

Ray just wanted to do his job
and make a fair wage for doing it.

The "big boys" came along and "stole"
his work, and they made the big bucks,
not Ray.

Where does "fairness" come into this?

I'm talking about the thingy you sign when you race at a competition event.  Many of them release your images for media use.  I've been on TV/mags before without signing a release.  This applies only to the racers, and only if the sign-in sheet has a media release.

Call it stealing if you like.  I never read them much anyhow, nor care a bunch either.  As long as they don't film me in the porta-john, I'm good.

I'd pay $200 if I were you and get someone who knows how all this works to advise you on options.

Now if you are the one who shot the video or pictures, you do have copyright ownership whether you've filed or not.  You are entitled to compensation for your work if others use it commercially.

Unfortunately, this is very common on many of the automotive forums I visit. People think they can show up like a Friday night grudge-racing session at their local dragstrip, pay $10, and make some passes. Then there are wanna-be's who want to find a "soft record", build a racer for it, and get a red hat on the first pass.

I have pointed out time & time again, (1) there is no grandstand, (2) there are rules, and people to enforce them, (3) there are no "soft records". The line about more people having climbed Everest than have membership in the 200 Club usually cools their jets.

When releases were signed for the Ford Fusion videos, I think that the agency said if your face is recognizable a release or compensation is required.

And they didn't take advantage of all the great footage they had.

I watched a National Geographic Channel show called Need for Speed this morning. The show focused on Tony Schmacher and Top Fuel racing with about ten minutes of the 2006 JCB effort added.

Not a continuous display of crashing, some technical content(nirto fuel and wings for Top Fuel) and a complete story from qualifing to final round. The JCB part showed some cars other than JCB and finished with their FIA record set following Speedweek.

My point is; the show was much more professional and complelling than the other train wreck. It looked like they used much more of their footage rather than repeatly showing the same 20 minutes or so over and over. A quality show can be done, it needs to have a talented producer and oversite.
